    Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate some help with my query!.I am business graduate from UL majored in accounting & finance. I graduated in 2008 and since then I have gained over 2 and half years experience in Finance industry. Well bascially I want to apply for H dip in secondary teaching, I know the deadline for applications is 1st December. I was just wondering with my experience gained would this help to gain entry?.. Also, I know that their is a large supply of business teachers at moment, but I was hoping to be able teach Accounting as my major subject and business as secondary!.Any advise welcome on the whole process!!

Accounting isn't offered as a Leaving Cert subject in every school.
In schools where it is offered as a Leaving Cert subject, it is usually 1 class group, maybe 2 for 2 double periods per week.
The business teacher will teach this.
I wouldn't depend on your accounting as a major subject for employment opportunities.

Thanks Gaeligebeo...the whole process of applying is a bit confusing to me, I know you can apply through the PAC website, but is the entry requirements of a high standard? and what's in relation to points?..thanks!

You can apply through PAC. UL also have a PGDE in Business to which you apply separately. Trinity also do similar. Check first of all on the Teaching Council website what you are eligible to teach. It probably is accounting, but just to be sure. There are huge numbers of Business Grad applicants to the PGDE every year, so much so that there is a quota on how many are accepted and there is a separate selection for business grads within PAC.

You can only teach what you have a degree in. So if your degree satisfies the requirements set out by the Teaching Council, then yes, you can teach both English and Geography. Check their website (or the PAC website) for more information.

You can apply through both NUI and Trinity to do the Hdip. Many people I know who did it in UCD would have got 2.1 degrees.

You would have teaching practice in both subjects and upon completion could register to teach and be qualified for both subjects. Be warned however, that English and Geography is a very common combination which could have a drawback later on in the jobs market.

I did the interview last year and got a place on the course. No big surprises in the interview. They asked a bit about my qualifications. Is it recognised by teaching council. I think they asked something about what I know of the syllabus for the subjects I teach. They asked why I want to be a teacher. They asked if I have any teaching experience or if I have worked with young people. They also wanted me to confirm that I have a school organised to do my teaching practice in. Can't think of anything else. Just try to stay calm and you will do fine. Good luck!!

I do not mean to be a party pooper but if you want to teach at the moment you will face 4-5 years minimum of substitution work, and then you may be offered a temp 1 yr contract,if lucky you are looking at 6-8 years before any stability.I think people are playing down the fact that there are no jobs and or hours available in schools. With more cuts on the way aswell. You have a huge cohort of part-time teachers who have min 5 years experience who are waiting to get full time contracts. With the cuts, what happens is any newly qualified teacher cannot compete with those who have experience. So you will end up leaving the country to work

    Hi,
    I didn't think I needed to start a new thread ...

I have an Engineering degree and I'm working in Industry for a good few years. I really need a change and I'm wondering about secondary teaching.

Would I be considered suitable for teaching Maths, Applied Maths, Physics, Computing?

Is there shortage in these areas?

Once I did my HDip, what kind of starting salary could I expect? Or if subbing, what kind of pay is available? Is it an hourly rate?

    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

    /M.

There is no shortage in areas and even subbing is hard come by. I'm fully qualified in maths with three years experience and only on 16hrs. sorry but there's no point being dishonest with you. Things are only getting worse out there.

You need to see if your degree is recognised by the teaching council of Ireland. Check their website. Remember a college accepting you for the pgde is not a guarantee the tc will accept you which would be a hell of a lot of money to waste.

Finally check the Asti website for salarys. If irc then the new salary scales start on 27k for first year out. However with teaching there is a huge caveat in that you are extremely unlikely to be on anywhere near full hours so like me even three years out in only on 16/22's of salary. I think there is a hourly rate for substitution but cant remember. Oh and finally if you don't get a contract then you won't get paid for school holidays including the summer

Niamh, congrats on your DCU place. Did you decide to take the place or are you holding out for Trinity? I understand the Trinity places are out in the next week or two.

Congrats to all those who got their places!!!:D

I missed the deadline myself, so I'm going to apply for 2013.

How much are the fees for the HDip? Since I can't start until 2013, I'm considering doing a Masters in Computer Science this year and then do the HDip. Since a Masters is a higher qualification that the HDip., would I have to pay full fees, and how much??

I can't find info anywhere on the actual fee amount!

Varies somewhat from college to college but is roughly 6000. It was 6350 for UCD this year as far as I remember. Trinity seems to be the cheapest at around 5,800.

Pretty sure the gov got rid of post grad grants, but could be wrong. I did it in Cork this year and it was €6.5k.

I paid €6500 for PDGE in UCD in 2010. Having a MSc makes no difference whatsoever. Also it's unlikely that your pay will be in any way higher than someone who doesn't have a masters as there is talk of abolishing the allowances. As it stands the you only get about an extra €600 pa anyway once you have an honours degree too. A masters will help you get a job ahead of Someone who doesn't have one but tbh you need to research how much benefit a masters in computer science would bring to your teaching CV - would it give you a deeper knowledge of the subjects you'd be teaching in school?? If not, do a masters in something else - or save your money!! A lot of people say - but a masters is a masters - but unless it's relevant to your subject - a principal may not take it into account at all.

I don't teach your subjects but check out the job ads on educationposts.ie or in the papers. This year seems to be very very slow so far, but jobs are usually advertised over the summer.

Carol there are numerous posts on the boards about this but in a nutshell:
There are few to no jobs in any teaching subject at the moment. Even with 3-4 years experience it is a struggle to find any regular work.
