Frozen handbrake

I had the misfortune of experiencing a frozen hand brake "7 times" during last years 2 cold spells. I brought the car to my mechanic, and he said there is nothing he could do with it. Can anyone recommend what I should do to prepare for this winter to stop/prevent this happening again?

    Car... 2006 Opel Zafira

    Thanks, Boardie2011

If you park on a level drive just leave it in gear and chock the wheels with a brick or two, don't apply the handbrake.

Thanks but forgot to add in my OP that I did that. The brake still froze, probably because the shoes froze?

Don't use the handbrake at all during winter if you can help it. Leave car in gear, that's how everyone that are used to winter does it, Scandis etc.
If you park in an incline, leave in gear and also turn wheel so car pushes up against kerb.

Could be the hand brake cable leaking a bit and getting frozen.
Replacing the cable might help, but you never know as problem might be somewhere else.

Generally it's very difficult to do anything with it, if it's not caused by cable.

Just as adviced leave your car on gear without the handbrake during the winter.
And don't use handbrake at all.
