its very bad, now you will have to sell your car for a half price.... :) if to be serious : if its diesel it could be bad as the water through the air filter could get into the injectors and damage them, but if its petrol the worst you could get is shutting the engine. if it makes any noises usually it's coming from one of the belts (generator) or other. and the steam is going from the heated exaust pipe or engine itself... so don't be afraid if it idnt stop usually it didnt do any damage :)

If you'd flooded the engine it would stop dead, you can't compress water and you'd be looking for a new engine. (It couldn't get into the injectors via the air filter, it goes direct in to the cylinders and bang, game over)

As has been said it was steam off the exhaust and belts squealing, will most likely be fine when dried out.

Is the engine still running or did it stop as soon as you went through the flood?

If its still running then you haven't damaged it.

if its diesel take injectors out or plugs if petrol, turn engine over and see if water comes out from cylinders. if it does its likely con rods are bent, you will be luckey to get away with replacing any rods that are bent, Its a big job,
