poor sound when hdmi connected to skybox

I have a Samsung 37inch lcd which is connected to a sky hd/plus box via hdmi cable.
however, the sound through this is poor and turning the volume up to 80 or 90 is needed to hear it properly.
if i change the source to analogue terrestrial aerial, it's normal volume, around 20 or so.

i have tried all settings on the tv and the sound is set to 'standard'.
are there any settings on the sky box for sound?
could the hdmi cable be faulty ?

it has something to do with the sky box software. afaik there is nothing you can do about it .

I find my Humax Freesat box, also connected with HDMI, also has a lower volume level than, say, the Saorview channels.

    Must be HDMI related.

I have noticed this also with my parents panasonic tv with the sky hd box. Haven't heard of any fix though.
