Already put this on the 4x4 forum but suspect not many here will wander over there ;)

Brother in law and myself have just acquired a 1959 Series 2 Land Rover for €100 that must have come over right at the start of the new reg system as it's 59 TS 1 :D

Needs a total rebuild, will to be useable condition rather than concours. Had the engine running yesterday for the first time in 10 years.

Also just to show you don't need to mollycoddle a 36 year old vehicle ;)

best of luck with her! is the cab steel?

Yes, the hardtop is steel and isn't original, it must have come off a 60s Irish assembled vehicle as it was part of the homebuilt content on them, factory item is aluminium. It's too far gone to salvage though, we'll put a canvas top on it which is what it left the factory with going by the body fittings.

Bulkhead is shot but we're being given one off a 58 that needs far less welding. The chassis needs major work or possibly a replacement, no problem getting the correct type. Thankfully all the parts that make it a 59 Series 2 are still present.

Nice.. I would say originally it was a pick up..

Wolf Rim on the back.. there's €40 straight off!

    Nice find and nice reg!

He he! We had to put some spare wheels on lying round the yard to get it on the trailer, there's two Disco steel rims on the other side

Soft top is most likely as it has early type rope loops inc behind doors (where's the nerd smilie when you need it!) but that's no guarantee.

If it wasn't for the reg I'm not sure we'd save it, been looking at the price of early parts

Also the reason why it won't be concours, you could easily blow 5-6 grand getting every detail right! Like I said, thankfully all the unique bits are still there.
Only built from 58-61 but it seems more 59s may have survived.

If it was me, i'd love to just get it going again, all mechanically spot on, sort the roof our or replace, and drive it as is, i think it looks awesome with the mould on it and the layers of dust and stains. Take for a spin through town then and watch the people in new shiny stuff recoil in fear!

I'd allow two aspects to be cleaned though, the windows and the lights

The Series 3 we have is a bit like that, patched rad panel and the bulkhead will get a lick of paint over the rust. Other than that it's wearing it's 36 year old worn paint job :)

The 59 is too far gone, it has to have a rebuild. We'll straighten the panels out and it will have a respray in Tractol or similar, modern 2 pack is too hard and shiny. It will stay mid grey, not my favourite colour but it's not that common.
