Rigid Test Tomorrow

I have my rigid test tomorrow and am extremely nervous. I have got over 20 hours of lessons and have the rules of the road fairly well learned off. But still I know I am going to fail. I had a driving lesson yesterday and it was all over the place and my driving has gotten worse.

Any advice on doing the test?

Don't go into the test thinking you're going to fail.

Try and relax, concentrate, keep your eyes peeled on what's going on up the road, check your mirrors regularly, check blind spots, listen to the tester's instructions and if you're not sure, ask him to repeat, make good progress, drive to the conditions, and above all, relax.

I know it hits your pockets but it's not the end of the world if you fail.

    Best of luck with it.

+1 What Grimpeur said. The best piece of advice I can give you is just remain as relaxed as possible. Don't think of the tester beside you, think of him as a mate and you're just going for a drive.

You will make mistakes, we all do but remember you can make 8! That's a good allowance Johnny. I thought I failed my Rigid test last year when the back wheel tipped the path on the drive but he only gave me a grade 2!
And ignore what he's doing with the marking sheet, he might be writing a shopping list for all you know!

    Best of Luck :)

Thanks for the advice guys. All I can do is my best and hope that it all falls into place. Hopefully my driver instructor has been extremely hard on me the last few lessons and that maybe it pays off in the end.

With heavy rain expected tomorrow, will the tester be willing on giving the under bonnet checks and reverse around the corner a miss as he might not want to get wet?

I will let you know tomorrow how I get on

In an ideal world Johnny. The tester will probably use an umberella! Anyway let us know how you got on!

Act like you are driving on your own or that you are with a driving instructor it will lessen the nerves. Think positive, say you can do it, no negativity, relax. If you think negative it will happen so turn the negative into a positive. Don't think about what you can't do or won't do but think about doing it right! You have worked hard and practised, know your rules of the road. Think of doing things right plan ahead of how you do it right simple steps remembering the procedures. Be confident and say to yourself I can do this!

Don't forget to get back into first gear after stopping. Speed to suit the situation, progress, using mirrors at crucial moments, using the gears correctly to suit situation, aware of hazards, clutch and break control is very important if you have mastered that you be grand. Observation rather than just skill is important, meeting the required standard is imperative but still think of it as something momentous that might change your life. What ever happens happens.

Stay cool, calm and collected. Deal with the test when it happens as it happens. Anticipate is important to think of here as well as safety. Get a good nights sleep. Best of luck with it!

You don't have to get back into first everytime to stop? 3rd is what I'd recommend, I always started and stopped in 3rd and never got marked for controls. Obviously it just goes down to preference or if the truck is a straight 6.

Oh ya I know its true if you are kind of stopping at 3rd rather than 2nd you can move on say at a yield sign if no traffic is there say at a roundabout or near a junction but at the same time you come to a complete halt but its recommend you stop at 2nd gear at least when slowing down and coming to a yield sign especially at a stop sign.

Yes. I've taken and passed two driving tests. However please note:

If you get 9 or more “Grade 2’s” you’ll FAIL the driving test.

If you get 4 “Grade 2’s” for the same fault i.e clutch, you’ll fail for improper use of the clutch.

If you get 6 or more “Grade 2’s” under the same section i.e Observation, your observation is not at test standard.

    Grade 3 (PINK BOX)
A single Grade 3 is given where there’s danger or potential for danger to other road users and is an instant FAIL of your driving test i.e not stopping at a stop sign.

So you're allowed 8 mistakes (Grade 2) spread out on the marking sheet and still pass. Grade 1 mistakes (Green) don't affect the result.

Passed :) I am really happy. I got 4 grade 2s and 1 grade 1. Done a two hour lesson before it and pulled everything together.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!

Well done johnny - that's a great result!

Where did you do the test by the way?
I wouldn't like to have done it with the weather conditions here in Dublin.

My test was in kilkenny. It was pouring rain during the test and we never done the outside vehicle tests but got plenty of theory questions to make up for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

Congrats Jonny, how did you manage to drive in that torrential rain never mind do a test! I struggled to drive in that kind of rain, bad case of reversing and mounting a kerb! :o Visibility very bad with the rain. Have driven and learnt to drive in rain but not as torrential as that, put me right off my concentration and made it harder to drive in it.
