Any suggestions of silent wipers/ good brands would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

How sure are you that its the blades?

Little tip, lift the wiper arm. on the underside you'll see a spring. Shoot it with WD40 or any lubricating oil.

Simple way to find out? Turn on the wipers, get out and you'll pinpoint it easier. From inside everything sounds like wiperblades.

And if it is blades...... BOSCH. That is all.

get genuine blades. they are no more expencive than most decent ones in the motorfactors.
do you happen to have the flat 'aero' blades on the golf by any chance?

Treat yourself to a set of BOSCH ones.

I also find that only using the wipers when their is sufficient water on the windscreen, using screenwash, and keeping the windscreen free of birdcrap, will lenghten and keep the wiper blades running efficiently and quietly.

Very, it's the blades and not the spring - good tip tho!

I honestly don't know what I bought last time - should I buy flat aero blades this time round?

Cool, thanks - that's 2 Bosch suggestions, so I'll give them a go thanks.
I bought 5litre of screenwash with antifreeze and keep screen clean.
I think the previous wipers I bought are just cheap crap - the rubber moves across the windscreen like there's no give in the rubber.

I got the OEM ones for my focus - they are very very quiet

There are 2types of aero blades for the mk4 golf. 1 just clips on instead of your normal spring type blade. The other type has a different type of arm.
I'll get you a picture later.

Vw made a type of aero blade 2 replace the normal spring type. Ask in your local vw dealer. I asked about the aero ones as you can just buy the rubber and spend 10mins swapping them over. It's about the third of the cost of new blades.

On the bosh blades I will never put them on a car again. First set I got lasted 2months before they started rubbing and dragging across the screen. I thought I just got unlucky so I tried another set after and they only lasted 3 months before the same thing happened. I easily got over 12months form a set of genuine ones before they started 2 get bad. Never again would I touch bosh blades.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, Bosch blades are OE, and fit by most manufacturers as they roll out of the factory.
So why pay the extra in a dealers, forthe exact same product from a factors.
    I could be wrong though.

Plus the ones I got from the stealer have a sticker on them that wears away with use letting you know when to replace them

Another recommendation for Bosch. I put Aeros on my car last year and have no complaints. Not cheap though, bought them online and still cost me about €45 including shipping.

I bought mine from here: www.wiperblades.co.uk

I changed my wipers recently for the first time in <embarrassinglylong> and I don't know what the last ones were but the new ones are Bosch and by jesus are they noisy. Even when the windscreen is drenched they still half the time go WERRRP WERRRP WERRRRP WERRRP, they do my head in!

My Subaru came with Bosch Aeroblades from new, but when I bought a replacement set of Bosch Aeroblades I found that they didn't fit properly (the curvature of the blades was a bit off). The Subaru OEM blades are made by Bosch, stamped 'Bosch', but fit & work perfectly. They're around the same price too.

I just took a look at my wipers this morning and they're Champion brand, they were clipped on new by fastfit last year - these are the ones that are noisy as hell.

They're clip on so I assume I've got the aero blades sean.

So now half are saying buy Bosch and half are saying they're ****e.

€45 bit steep to be ordering online from uk bazz, thanks for suggestion tho.

Valeo Wipers are the business. OEM for most new European cars and last longer then Bosch IMO

There were 6 quid cheaper then bosch for a pair in my local motor factors

The "one sided" noisy skipping is almost always due to wiper blade not aligned properly. Looking from the side, both blades should sit at 90 deg angle against the windscreen. Starting the wipers when frozen on windscreen etc knocks them off, but often they are incorrectly set even from the factory.

Carefully twist both arms using strong pliers until perfect. I have always got mine running silently regardless of brand of blades. Blades then tend to stay quiet until they literally begin to split with old age.

Also another tip. Use concentrated washer fluid or even vinegar and kitchen roll to work your old blades until the rubber feels smooth. If the blades were never cleaned they can initially feel really scruffy. This will most likely resolve any streaking issues there may be unless the blades are really bad.

you can get cheap aero wipers from the UK on eBay, I've bought 3 pairs for 3 different cars and tbh they're great and come in from 10-20 euro incl postage!
