Thinking of moving to UPC from Eircom, basically it's cheaper and opting for 25mb package, Wondering if it's any better ? Eircom runs laptop and two iphones fine and online for ps3 . Is there much involved resetting ps3 etc . Is technical support from UPC good !! any responses appreciated

Yes UPC is better. Should run all devices with no problems. PS3 is easy to setup. Tech support is ok, don't use them much as don't have many problems.

Go for UPC you won't look back... eircom are stuck in the past.

Changed from eircom next generation (up to 24mb) to UPC. I was only getting 11mb.
Went for 50mb and am getting a constant 48/49mb.

Watch out for wireless "G" cards. They can only transfer up to 25mb and I found that you need all wireless "n" adapters on your network. Just watch out for that if you go for the 50/100mb package if you are getting lower speeds.

Im upgrading to UPC and need to cancel eircom phone and broadband.

Have been with eircom for years. Do I need to give them a certain amount of notice or anything?

No notice needed as UPC deal with that.
I actually just phoned Eircom and they advised me that my account was cancelled so it is true what UPC say.

You won't know yourself with UPC.

You'll wonder why you let yourself get conned by eircom for so long, or indeed, why anyone who can get UPC stays with eircom.

So I dont need to deal with eircom at all when changing?

No. UPC will send you out a porting number form, just fill it out, send back, and they do the rest. should take less than a week to changeover.

Actually, I did mine online, details are in the welcome pack. They will still send you out the form but doing it online speeds up the process. I got mine in on a Friday and had been port forwarded by Tuesday. Pretty impressive.

But I would have still thought you would need to contact eircom in order to cancel your line and stop them charging you also? No?

Nope. I contacted them to be sure, as I was sceptical like you :) and they had already cancelled my account and said they would be sending me out a closing statement,

UPC do the cancelling for you once you complete the form - you do not need to do anything else. if you ring eircom and cancel your line that way, you may risk losing your telephone number completely, and that could end up being quite costly to get back.

Cool. Thats put my mind at ease now :)

I thought cancelling eircom would be awkward.

The whole thing is a breeze.

I signed up in Currys. I had TV with upc so was upgrading to Broadband and Phone.

When the whole process is completed I will be getting a voucher from Currys for €125, so happy days.

After signing in Currys, on a Tuesday aftrenoon, I got a phone call from UPC on Wednesday morning. Self install package arrived on Friday 9.10am and was up in running within an hour and port forwarded my old phone number by the following Tuesday.

I'd echo what's been said already. I'd held off moving for a couple of years due to UPC's alleged bad reputation. But it was very simple and the staff couldn't have been nicer. I think the pleasant customer service was the biggest surprise for me!!

I got the 25mb package/TV/phone with self-install and it worked first time.

The only snag I had (and it was my fault) was with the phone. There are 2 telephone sockets on the back of the modem and I'd plugged the phone into the wrong socket. As far as I can gather, the 2 telephone sockets are for 2 different telephone numbers if you have them. You have to plug your phone in socket 1.

Well just got UPC installed today. All good with a wired connection.. Getting up to 50 meg..

However, only half that on the wireless. Tried on two pcs and laptop so must be the router. Any ideas lads?

Just saw this sticky with a section on this.

I would check this out first as i stated earlier:

"Watch out for wireless "G" cards. They can only transfer up to 25mb and I found that you need all wireless "n" adapters on your network. Just watch out for that if you go for the 50/100mb package if you are getting lower speeds. "

Think you may have pinpointed the problem.

The wireless card in my laptop is only capable on G I think Dell Inspiron 1525.

Although the max rate in the wireless card properties in 54.

Also, I have a PC that I have connected to a WRT54GL v1.1 and the linksys is bridged to the UPC router.

Im guessing the linksys is not capable of n either.

Tried on my HTC Desire Z as well though and the speed test is still a lot less than 50.

I needed to buy an adapter for my main PC as it was too far to run a wired option to it so I bought an "n" adapter and got 48mb in that pc. My main laptop had a "g" adapter and I only got 25mb. I connected it direct to the modem supplied by upc and got 50mb. I went to PC world and bought a netgear "n" adapter (same as one I bought for my PC). It cost 25e for the cheapest netgear adapter. Now I get around 48mb on my laptop.
PCworld have a 16 day refund option so if you keep all the packaging you can get a refund if it is not suitable for your needs.

Cheers, il give that a go.

Any idea why I may only be getting around 25 meg on my desire z?

I have tried when im next to the router.

If you're using bridge mode on the UPC router the telephone service will not work. I think you signed up for UPC phone also???. DMZ mode would be the only option after that.

    Hey,

No haven't changed anything on the UPC router.

I just have the linksys in bridge mode and that connects to the UPC router for internet access.

If you move from Eircom to Upc and port over your number do Eircom charge you an extra month on your final bill? Do they charge a cancellation fee even when your out of say a 12 month contract?

I'm thinking of moving to Upc and I dont want to have to contact Eircom. I hate dealing with them.
