Try logging in at http://appleid.apple.com and see if it gives you any hints or notices there as to what you need to do. If not, you'll be able to change your email address to a current one.

Have tried that Aidan all seems ok but when I try to get an app it uses my old extinct email

If you change your email address on that page are you able to sign out and into iTunes using the new email address and the same password?

Yes, I finally got it done and it worked. The solution was strange though.

It was on behalf of a friend who'd set up an address p.xxxxx57@gmail.com. When he then created his iTunes account he left out the 57.

3 years later, it was down to me to unravel this mess as iMessage etc is demanding verification, something that Apple did not used to insist on. When I put in the correct address at the ID site, nothing happened until I tried without the dot and it then sent verification to pxxxxx57. Despite all the odds the verification email came to the p. address, I was able to verify and change and he now logs in once more with pxxxxx57

    Weird.

Sorted the same issue yesterday, I'd inadvertantly left out a digit on my E mail addess when I upgrades to IOS5. The only solution that worked for me was in open a new apple account and a new sign in E mail address and password.

I tunes looks for a visa/card verification but it was no issue. Now able to access my apps and updates again.
