Redundancy... Is it legal?

Just a quick bit of information:

Been with company A for 1.5 years which company B bought over along with my contract been working with company B for the past 2 months, company B has just informed me that they're making me redundant as the need to reduce staff levels in my field, staff levels in my field are very low at the moment and work is at an all time high, i am wondering is this legal as there is a lot more work here and believe me this is a high pressured job, 3 staff members are being let go all just under 2 years experience although these staff members are probably the most productive in the department, is it a case that they are getting rid of us just before we get full entitlements or am I looking in to this to much.

Also they have informed me that they may call me from time to time if there are people out sick or on holidays but i have a suspicion that this is unfair as i am sure they will be getting more staff in as the people that work in the company at the moment will go to the trade union due to low staff levels.

Any help here would be great as im backed in to a corner and will not survive on social welfare.
