    It's Bryan not Brian ;)

Cullen should be on that list ahead of Paddy Kelly and Eamon O'Callaghan IMO.

Some of those selections are shambolic...Passy Kelly and Eamon O'Callaghan as dcr has said.

Kev Mc, hero no doubt but didn't really deserve a nomination and not ahead of Bryan Cullen.

Really surprised Mick Fitz and Jamesy McCarthy didn't at least get nominated especially when you see Joe McMahon nominated.

Ya can never keep everyone happy I suppose :D

No issues with that from a Kerry point of view. Eoin Brosnan and Anthony Maher will maybe feel a tiny bit aggrieved, but it looks right to me.

Donnacha O'Connor and Paddy Kelly are serious WTF inclusions.

I'd have no issue with O'Connor given his performance against Down in the final round of the qualifiers but Kelly's inclusion is unusual as I don't think he's had that great a year in 2011.

The Mayo ones look as expected too.

very happy that Cillian O' Conor got nominated even though he will not win one, expect him to get young player of the yaer

    Ahead of Rory O'Carroll ?

It's between himself and Rory O'Carroll for it in most pundits' view.

Wouldn't begrudge it to him, he's had a fine season especially the 2nd half of the Connacht final.

Bryan Cullen scored in every round of the championship, some critical scores too, bar the final i think and was captain of the winning team and is omitted.

Mikey Fitz also does an excellent job marking the oppositions marquee forward in every game yet Joe McMahon stands 20 yards off his man at regular intervals in an All Ireland QF and gets nominated. Crazy stuff.

Pleased the unheralded Ger Brennan gets a mention. I'd easily have him over Nolan and McCarthy as Dublins best HB. Didn't get a flashy goal or one solitary but important point in an AI final but was a rock in defence and always showed for the ball when times got tough.

Bar the obvious winners of which there are a few, I think Paul Flynn has been a real unsung hero for Dublin this year.
His lack of points will probably go against him in the final selection, and there are some really strong players in the hald forward area. But of all the Dubs I would like to see him get one the most.

Yeah you're probably right - I just picked on the spot, would probably have a slightly different selection if I thought more about it.

As a Mayo man I'm surprised by the inclusion of Alan Dillon. His form was not good this year IMO. Keith Higgins may have missed out due to two unsavory incidents ...

As a Kildare man I would have though the two O'Flahertys would have been more worthy of nominations than Bolton and Leper. Johhny Doyle didn't have the greatest of championships either mainly due to carrying knocks.

My team from the nominations though would be:
    Cluxton

    McGrillen
    Foley
    C.O'Sullivan

    Lacey
    Brennan
    Cassidy

    Sheehan---MacAuley

    A.Brogan
    Da.O'Sullivan
    Brosnan

    Cooper
    Bradley
    B.Brogan

Probably not a vintage season in terms of quality when you look at that.

The credibility of these type of awards is zero!
Kildare 5 nominations? Mayo 5 nominations and noone else from Connacht?
Nominations for A Dillon and John Doyle after very average years??
McMenaman nominated for all star team yet not good enough for Dublin starting 15??
It's a matter of you know and who answers the phone to the journo's favourites are that gets the nod.

colm mcfadden definitely deserves it more than michael murphy

McFadden IMO is overrated, and anyone ho saw the comparison between te 2 players in the DL co final on Sunday will have seen why

Certainly last Sunday's final showed why the Dubs were glad he played lar na pairce in semi. Class act .... if only McGuinness can see the worth of the man as an out and out forward .. he might have made the Dublin panel on his performance last Sunday ;)

Have to agree totally with the above. He has been immense all year and improving all the time. Prior to this year I would have been one of his biggest critics, but delighted to eat my words. Re lack of scoring from HF he might be an option in the future for midfield. I think he plays there for Fingallions.

Dillon nominated for Mayo is a strange one. Thought he was below par for most of the championship except for the Cork game. Kevin McLoughlin would have deserved a nomination

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭Cill Dara Abu

Diarmuid Conolly?? He had a good game against Tyrone and that was it!

Eoin Bradley played well in the games played before getting injured but he simply didn't play enough to warrant an inclusion.

    Eamon Callaghan is another surprise.

Good to see 5 Kildare lads there but I think only Foley and JD will get an all-star.

If you watch the All Ireland final again, Connolly had a very under the radar game but was highly involved in a lot of crucial moves and came massively to the fore in the last 10 minutes with his ball retention and recycling.

He's a full forward who failed to score in five games out of seven, it's just not All Star stuff.

Cill Dara Abú said that he had only oine game which I was correcting by highlighting his performance in the final. He also had a good game against Laois in the Leinster championship.

Absolutely not .. If we can assume the Brogans will occupy places in the forward line, whatever hope Dublin have of squeaking a 3rd award, I would much rather see going to Paul Flynn than DC

Don't think it was a particularly great year by Bernard Brogan, something like 12 points from play in six games? Meh. He wasn't the best forward on a team whose forwards were workmanlike rather than spectacular in every game bar one, so he would be far from nailed on to any properly selected team of the season.

Flynn on the other hand is probably the breakout player of the Championship, really upping his level this year and being pretty impressive in every game that I remember, obv in a different role.

Obv the All Stars are an ongoing bad joke and not having both Brogans in the team would be an appalling PR gaff so he'll definitely get in, but the point stands nevertheless.

Probably the most accurate All Star team selection I have seen from the nominated All Stars. However I would replace Tom O Sullivan with Cian O Sullivan and John Doyle with Michael Dara McAulay personally but in order to make the selection that little bit less biased I would say the above is a good indication.

From Donegal Lacey should definitely be in and possibly McGee also. Murphy probably hasn't done enough in the Championship this year to be in but if he fulfils his potential for Donegal will certainly get many All Stars. He is a class act and was immense for his club in the County final last weekend. I really hope McGuinness uses him properly in future and the rest of Ireland sees what a player he is.

Andy Moran (Mayo), Bernard Brogan (Dublin), Colm Cooper (Kerry)

Stuck between Andy Moran and Colm McFadden in the forward line and go with Moran because Mayo got a lot out of him, Graet leader.
Tomás O'Se ahead of Marc O'Se and Killian Young. Still a great player.

Flynn has had a great year for Dublin and really came good when he was needed. Brosnan was great to watch and could be a real star. Kevin Cassidy had a good year also. Had Donegal used Murphy more effectivley he would be in ahead of Moran.

Between Bernard Brogan and John Doyle for player of the year

I assume you mean Alan ?

John Doyle who is very, very effective for a Kildare team who are all hype but I have more of a chance of player of the year than him. ;)

As I said class player but don't understand the hype that surrounds him sometimes, at times it is baffling.

There is no one more Hyped in the Country than the Brogans. At the end of the day Bernard only has 1 All Star, compared to the Gooch who has 6 All Stars, 4 All Irelands and Still the hype that surrounds Brogan cannot be compared.

John Doyle is the most unassuming player you will ever meet. Respected by all his peers.

There is no bullsh*t with Johnny. No diving looking for handy free's. No claiming he's entitled to anything. He takes the hits and gets on with the game.

A proper role model for all aspiring kids out there who want to play GAA.

Has far more class as a sporting person than either of the 2 Brogans could ever hope to have.

    +1

The Brogans both have always struck me as nice fellows, and I believe from people I know living up around Castleknock they're supposed to be pretty ok as well. They're both fine players and certainly comport themselves extremely well whenever they play for Dublin.

    Doyle similarly oozes class.

On the actual playing issue, I think I'd veer towards the great Eamonn Dunphy line of "He's a good player Bill, not a great player" for both.

They're both very good players in fact, and if Alan plays as he has this year for another two or three years he'll be close to greatness, while I think Bernard has a fair bit more to do to get there, notwithstanding the fact that he is certainly talented enough to do so.

I think John Doyle is straight up a "great player", his level of performance this year having moved from corner forward to midfield was incredible IMO, and cemented him.
