Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this... Anyway. I am 17 (male), just passed the theory test and i have applied for the provisional or drivers permit. I am on the look out for a car. I have a ford escort van for tipping about so im not a bad driver. I have anything from 400 - 1500 so not too much. The main question is insurance as i dont have a clue what i will be able to get insured in. I would like something fairly nice and sporty looking but it must be fairly cheap to get insurance for. Hope you can get back to me on this.

    Thanks in advance

Your best bet is to find a car that you like, that you can afford and then get some online quotes to see how much they'll fleece you for insurance.

Just remember, the cheapest quote isn't always the best. Weigh up the worth of the car in terms of money to you and compare fully comp with 3rd party, fire and theft, at the prices you are talking 3rd party is probably your cheapest & best option.

If I were you at that type of price I'd avoid buying French, really poor electrics

Thanks for the advice, Appreciate it.

would i be wright in saying that a 3 door car would be alot more expensive than a 5 door and the power of the engine would be another factor?

    In terms of insurance?
Engine size will definitely be a factor, not sure about the number of doors affecting insurance quotes. Non-standard modifications will also be a factor

    Hi

Anything above a 1.4 on a learner permit will be very expensive/difficult to get insurance for. When I was starting out, I didn't want to drive a smaller car like a micra or anything like that. Ended up getting a 1.9 non turbo diesel renault magane.

It would have been around the same as a 1.4 patrol in terms of power. Those cars do have their problems, cooling system was the biggest issue for me and I wouldn't suggest you go French as others have said.

Having said that, you could look at a 1.4 skoda/passat/astra. Wouldn't be as cheap as to insure as a micra, but they're bullet proofand easy enough to bling up if that's your thing with a nice set of alloys or whatever.

In terms of insurers, try http://www.brittoninsurance.ie

They're a broker and seem to offer some good quotes starting out.

Once you pass your driving test, you will see your premiums go down. Was a massive difference for me anyway.

    All the best
