Hi all, I got a new desktop today running Windows 7 home premium.
I have burned 4 dvd recovery discs and 1 driver and applications recovery disc as promted. Anything else I should do while its still in a virgin state ?
I am trying to do it right THIS time as normally I just dive straight in and regret it at a later date. I have activated the 2 month free Norton too.
Have I forgotton anything ? Thanks.

    Download each of the following
    1. AVG Free.
    2. VLC Media player.
    3. CCcleaner

Remove Norton and install AVG Free.
Run CCcleaner any time you install or uninstall new software.

If you can spring for it get an external hard drive and run weekly backups.
I use nova backup for this task.

Best of luck with new PC

    Paul.

    Install each of the following

Don't install AVG Free, that is worse than Norton these days for the bloat, use Microsoft Security Essentials instead or if really not wanting to use MSE Avast, but AVG has been rubbish for the last few years

AVG was last good at version 7.5 iirc. Since then Norton has actually improved a bit and AVG has gone downhill. It also comes loaded with ridiculously annoying toolbars and junk. Essentials is fine and will do the job. But like everything the best AV is common sense!

I agree with Yoyo.. Microsoft Security Essentials is far better at this stage... I used to use AVG but the last few version really put me off it..

I agree also - since having problems a few years ago with AVG I moved to nod32 and have never looked back . From what I read on the forums Essentials also does the trick .

Why not buy a 1TB hard drive and have a back up on that, without burning 4 DVDs and having a Scratch on one of them and your f**ked.

if i had a new computer why not Install VMWARE ? and install windows 7 and run that and use that all the time so if all comes to all you just trash the image and you have a back up of a clean one ready to use.

    Thats what i have running,

I had a VmWare ESXi Server installed which rolled out the Image to my computer. now i just have Norton Ghost on a Server, which rolls out a clean image if needed.

Reason i dont use Vmware any more is that i have time Time Capsule for my Apple and Ghost for my PCs in the room..

Whoa There ! It was just within my limits to do what I did. what you are saying sounds like muffled Latin to me ! But I will try to decipher what you said, a sentence at a time. Thanks for your help....wish I had your knowledge !

Once you have the pc in virgin territory it can be a good idea to "Ghost" an image of the pc onto a spare hard-drive for easy restoration of a virgin system afterwards. This is especially handy with self builds or computers where there is no recovery disks or partions, however if you have started to install software onto it then it is probably too late as in the future if you wanted to roll it back then the software you install today like MS office 2010 and Firefox 7, itunes 10.5 etc. will all be replaced with newer versions in a year or twos time and a clean install would be easier.

I find avast to be a bit better than AVG, although I've fluctuated between both. Certainly avast behaves better with utorrent and some online games. I'm not a fan of MS essentials stuff although I haen't really had a good look at it.

Right call with Norton though, it's the Daily Mail of antivirus programs. Running Ccleaner is no harm, and I'd do a few regular disk defrags using Defraggler in between installing new software to keep your system running smoothly.

Another thing I'd do would be to look into backing up important files online - this can be done with a lot of PC companies but personally I have a €40 a year web hosting with digiweb and backup my important documents etc to it via FTP. Saves a lot of hassle too when changing PC because I can download from that faster than a USB stick can transfer files! :)

You must have a good upload on your connection, I'd hate to try that with my 1TB hard-drive and my 40kbps upload

Hehe, yeah UPC. 50Mb down, 5Mb up. Only 15GB of storage though - I tend to use it very little; only for stuff that can't be re-obtained like personal documents, pictures, stuff like that. And then I have the website running as well, which is more what I bought it for.
