    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a dvd that would be suitable for a runner for strength conditioning, one that covers abs, weights, thighs etc.

At the moment, I am using a target toning dvd, which is split into sections of 10 mins on arms, thighs, abs, buns and stretching. http://www.amazon.co.uk/10-Minute-Solution-Target-Toning/dp/B000KRNMS0. Do you think this is of much benefit to a road runner doing 5 & 10ks?.

The main things a runner needs to worry about is the core, lower back and glutes - everything else is secondary. A lot of running injuries are caused by weaknesses in these areas.

I don't know of any DVD's specifically. Out of interest, what sort of exercises does that DVD have you doing for abs and arms?

coacheschoice.com have lots of DVDs for lots of sports including

I can't vouch for this particular DVD, but other coaches choice DVDs that I have purchased have been great.

For the abs, mostly sit ups (4 types) and the plank. For the arms, just weights - 4 different types of arm raises with the weights, sorry cant remember the name of them, I think 1 is called lateral raise.

Wouldn't bother with sit ups to be honest. Highly controversial exercise nowadays and doesn't do anything that other exercises can't do - people tend to also do them wrong and do too many of them making them very ineffective and a waste of time. Plank is a much better exercise for the abs, a lot of exercises for strengthening, if done correctly, will be assisting in strengthening the abdominal area.

25 mins treading water . Working the water hard. 3 or 4 time a week has my core working very well . With a bad back I find it essential and treat it as pain management.

Thanks but I wouldn't have the time to swim 3 / 4 times a week, really want a dvd that I can use at home whenever I can get a free hour.

front plank (key is to engage your abs and glutes). hold for 20 secs
side plank - engage abs and glutes. hold for 20 secs on either side
bridging - basically lying hip thrusts. key to them is to engage your hips, glutes and quads. a cushion between the thighs helps focus the effort
