Second Hand Bike

Hello folks, apologies if this is the wrong forum since it seems to be mostly about competitive cycling.

I've just moved up and want to get a cheap second-hand bike to cycle to work. I had a good bike stolen a few days ago- two days after getting it!- so don't want to spend much money, since Dublin seems to be suffering an epidemic of bicycle theft. Does anyone know of a good shop or website to go to?

Also, could anyone suggest a brand or make of lock that can't be sliced through by thieving skangers? I honestly don't understand how the bikeshop owner looked me in the eye and took forty quid for a lock that gave me about as much security as a 'please do not steal' sign.

There are all sorts here, just some of us (well, them) are nuts about racing...

You could try Little Sport in Fairview, they usually have a selection. You could also try scouting around the market off one of the Balbriggan exits of the M1 for your bike. I'm told stolen bikes can end up for sale there...

Posted just a bit earlier today...
I wonder could you go back to the bike shop demand your money back? Have you got the broken lock?

The thieves didn't leave a trace so I doubt I'll get any joy heading back for a refund.

Do you know exactly where this Balbriggan market is?! I've heard rumours of it before!

I'll try Fairview but it's a bit of a trek- let me know if you think of any nearer town!

    Thanks for your help!

Have a look on adverts.ie also. Some decent bikes on there.
As for locks, I'd say buy the best you can afford. Abus and Kryptonite seem to be recommended. I use a Trelock myself. Have a look on them for Sold Secure sticker - either bronze, silver or gold (gold being best). This should give you an idea of how good a lock is.

I spent €45 for a lock for my bike. Any lock can be broken - its just a matter of how long it'll take them to break it! Mine is ABUS and it says it takes 3 minutes to break it!! Some of the €100 locks take 5 minutes to break.

I got bike insurance from CycleSure.ie for the year for my new bike. It is registered world wide so traceable if someone steals it.

I still am very cautious about where I lock it up and have it mostly indoors. Avoid places where a van can easily park up next to the bikes and obstruct the view while they steal them.

    Best of luck!

Adverts, donedeal, gumtree and the adverts section on here are all good places to look for a second hand bike, you just have to know what you're looking for.

^^ that's where I got my secondhand bike. They build you one to order with a secondhand frame out of a combo of recycled and new parts. MTB goes for 130 quid, hybrid for 165 ish, road bike for 200-something. Takes about two weeks to get a bike to you, provided they have a frame you like/fit, which they might not since their stock rotates so often and randomly.

they do repairs and servicing as well. good lads in the shop. check 'em out.
