My car was first registered on 01/01/02.
The current nct cert expires on 31/12/11.
Will my next test cert be for one or two years?

If it's tested before the 01/01/12 then it will be for two years. If it's tested after the 01/01/12 then it's only 1 year as it's older than 10 years by 1 day.

Just book it in now, you can do it 3 months before the old one expires.

    IMO it's a stupid rule.

Are you 100% sure on that?

Because I thought it only works on the date of registration?

I'm practically in the same boat as the op, car first registered on 02/01/02, so are you saying if I NCT it now it will be for 2 years?

    That is not correct.

As this is 10th registration anniversary test, no matter when OP will do it, cert will be valid only to 31/12/2012 (for one year)

I have the definitive answer for this now.

You do not get a 2 year NCT in this case.

My car first registered on 02/01/02. I still have a valid NCT til 01/01/12, but I did it early. That was this morning.

I passed, and my NCT is valid until 01/01/13.

So even though my car is only 9 years 10 months old, it still goes on the date of first registration, so hence only NCT'd til January 2013.

    just saw this ad

    so how does that work?

    My bad..

Example of car's 10 years old

Car tested on 1st August 2011
Car registered on 1st September 2011

    Cert valid for 1 year.

In my defence I was looking at the June 1st example and the car tested on the 1st of May just before the rule was launched, which you would get a two year cert for?

As for the Santa Fa no idea how he could get a 2014 cert.

    So for the OP.

    Car registered on Jan 02

Car tested on December 11/Januray 12

Cert valid for 1 year regardless of when it's tested before or after the date the cert is valid for 1 year. Although if you leave it too long the cert is backdated.

Yeah, I had something else there. Decided to double check the NCT website. You we right. My mistake, I did but up an example.

No problem at all. It's just such a confusing thing, especially when people are hearing conflicting information.

For the record, I asked the tester why it was only til '13, and not '14. He said regardless whether I did it early or not, the date of first registration is in 2012, as the car is 10 years old then, it's only eligible for a 1 year cert :)

    so how does that work?

    Simple.
Car must have been tested before new regulations came in force in June (or maybe July) this year.

Thanks for that. It is what I thought even though I hoped not.
Will be doing mine soon too.

Typo or chancer, the only way a car will have its next nct in 2014 is if it is a 10-xx reg

Nope. Just to give you one example. A car first registered on 01/01/2004 has its next test due on 01/01/2012. You can test it 3 months early, so in fact you can test it today. The NCT cert will be valid until 01/01/2014

The only thing is that car in question described by Tigger was 02 car.
If the car was first registered 01/01/2002, then even if NCT was done today, it would only be up to 01/01/2013, as this is car's 10th registration anniversary.

I still can see a way it could work.
Assume car was first registered in May 2002 f.e. in UK, but was imported to Ireland only in January 2010.
Then the day it was registered in Ireland (assume 10th January 2010) it was due NCT. It passed it, and got a disc until 10/01/2012.
So now it can go through next NCT, and because on 10/01/2012 car won't be 10 years old yet (it will be missing 4 months), and therefore it's not it's 10th year registration anniversary, they would have to issue disc for 2 year, which is 10/01/2014.

That's the only way I can see this happening legally, that 02 car has NCT until 2014 now.

Bringing this up again. How has this guy a 2 year NCT up to April 2014 on a '02 BMW 520??

It sounds the exact same situation I was in, posted up above. I've queried on it, but he's adamant.

    Example:
It was first registered in October 2002 abroad.
Imported to Ireland in March 2010.
NCT done just after import was valid until March 2012.
In March 2012 NCT was due, so as car at the time of due date was only 9 years and 5 months, then NCT cert was issued for 2 years.
