I don't get the tax exempt...It would have to be a disabled person or passenger, I doubt that travels from owner to owner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,107 ✭✭✭hi5

Probably a disabled driver, but it is manual??

    Maybe diplomatic?

    Heres a list of exemptions,

If it's exempt why is it advertised as taxed?.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

It has a tax disk therefore its "taxed" the fact its for zero amount is by the by. Of course the only plausible reason for zero tax is disabled driver and unless you can prove you are then the car will need to be re-classified.

That car is tax exempt by the looks of it, but it will not transfer over to the new owner unless they meet the same conditions.

I have a Hiace van, previous owner had it tax exempt as it was used for transporting Lifeboat equipment. When I got it I still had to pay the €288 p.a.

This car below is interesting, I'd nearly go look at it but I'd need a trailer a couple of times a week with it and its not worth the hassle, but a 320CDi engine would be nice, automatic too :), but it neither a classic nor will it be for a good few years. €288 tax instead of €1566 which is nice though.

    It's not exactly cheap either?

Id guess yer man selling it hasn't a clue about the tax issue, he probably bought it that way, hasn't used it much if at all, and is now selling it on.

Or he does have a clue, but he's hoping the person he's selling to hasn't

why would it be only 288 tax,is that due to age ??

Is it classified as a hearse ? seen a few imported vauxhall vectra estates that are used as meat wagons and run arounds for the undertakers.

    A hearse is €88 though isn't it?

but if you dont have a business its full price, hence question

Thanks for the explanation re tax free.

Maybe he does have a business reason for the tax bracket, and so would the new owner, in theory. Didnt they recently change some things to enforce this law a bit better? I know my dad got rid of his jeep when he couldnd tax it commercially due to the change.

And for a hearse... how many dead bodies does it have to carry per year for it to remain a hearse? ;) do you need maybe a PSV licence to drive a hearse?

I dunno bout that, im not registered as a buisiness, but my tax class on my van is still the same as it has been the last few years with no quesations asked, still E288. I think its if you buy a commercial now and dont have a vat number you will have to tax it privately?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

I think its either a mis-informed or lazy person at the tax office. My dad was told he needs a vat or a herd number (have farm no herd number), but my girlfriends dad has the same situation, farm, jeep, and no herd number and her dad got away with taxing commercially at the tax office... dont know really. Only other difference I see is van vs jeep.

    Two nice hearses:

I am not sure but if you own it before new law came in you can still tax commercial, bit of a grey area i think
sure someone will give a better answer

I've had the same pickup truck for the last 5 years,I had to go to the garda barracks for a declaration stamp and show commercial insurance this year to get tax,was told I dont have to do it next year though as its now on record,a bit silly really as I might not actually qualify next year:rolleyes:.

Even if the car really was tax free, the asking price is still too high :p

It's up to you to declare that your van is now classified as private. If you get stopped by Gardai, you basically have an untaxed car. Unless you can prove you are using it commercially, which you can't ;)

A sole trader does not need to be VAT registered, while still running a business. In that case you use your PPS number instead. Once VAT registered, the PPS number is actually the sole traders VAT number anyhow. Some tax offices then just let farmers stick the Herd number in there due to lack of knowing what else to use.

And you're not supposed to use a commercially taxed vehicle for private stuff like bringing your kids to school of course .. (officially).

That's all there is about it.

As for tax excempt, hearse, breadvan and all the likes, it does not transfer, so the second ownership changes, there might be a bill coming.

Note the EW switch and manual winder for the passenger window!

Replacement door or door card, wouldn't read too much into that.

On the contrary, that in conjunction with this: 'No expense has been spared with this car. they just cant be got in this condition' pretty much sums that car up for me.:)

    +1

    And for completeness:

If your turnover is over €37.5k (selling your services) or over €75k (selling goods) you MUST register for and charge VAT

If your turnover is lower, you don't have to, but you can if you want to
