SIP roofs on masonary builds

    Morning!

I was just wondering if it's possible to put a SIP roof onto a block build. We've just put our ad in the paper for planning permission. We plan to build with block on the flat and then externally insulate. However, the house is a dormer bungalow and they are notoriously hard to get right from an airtightness point of view.

Is it possible to mix the two by putting on a SIP roof to this set up?

Any roof on any house can be got right or wrong from an A/T perspective, its just a matter of detailing and workmanship..
As BF has indicated it is a design issue.
Many SIP roofs dont have any collars showing and the rafters are at wide centers so at a minimum, IMO, you need some form of structural ring beam to take the wall plate.

The 2 main options are a cast reinforced concrete ring beam or a structural steel one.

The reason I offer this is that it will be too later to address when the blocks on flat are at wallplte level and the quys are there with some warped 4 by 3 and a few compress nails :)

Finally, if going with EWI with block on flat think about the cold-bridging issues at windows and doors.

    Keep warm

Thanks a million BryanF and Carlow52! It was just a thought that occurred to me last night re the SIP roof.

Carlow52 - our architect told us that block on the flat with EWI is the best way of building in their opinion - especially from a detailing and cold bridging point of view. We will be putting in EWI sills that are obviously insulated thus minimising cold bridging around windows etc.

    What would you suggest?

Glad to put some ideas out there.

The sill is only one 1/4 of the ope:D

When ewi is a retro job the outer reveal and head of the opes only get a thin sliver of insulation due to the window frame.

One ewi application I saw had the windows fixed to the outside of the wall on brackets, like hanging a notice board with 4 brackets, and the ewi then came up to the window and the reveal was all ewi.
Just be certain of the detailing for fixing the windows and make sure the window/doors guys know what they are at

Whats the plan for insulating the foundations as 215 mm on flat is a big lump:)

I assume there will be no internal insulation so planning sockets etc needs to be robust:)

With the block on flat and external insulation is it possible to achieve passive house standard or close to it?
I like the idea of single leaf construction as I've seen it in Germany with their Poroton blocks.
