Social Services card

Apologies if this is in the incorrect place. Wasn't sure where to put it.

Aside from unemployment and/or medical card eligibility, what reason might a person have for possessing a Social Services card? It's the white one.

Isn't everyone issued with one from time to time? Its meant as a (limited) form of ID for dealing with Social Welfare and Revenue. Photos are being added to them from last month.

The implication I take from your post is that you are suspicious of someone who has one, which is probably misguided.

I got one when I was about 17. As far as I know I received it because I was working for my Dad at the time and paying taxes. If you're not paying taxes, you receive it when you apply for it or for some form of financial assistance from the state (or at least that used to be the case)

It's not that I'm naturally suspicious, it's just that my housemate is a bit 'high-and-mighty' about 'dole spungers' and regularly gets on his high horse about same. I only noticed the other day, when he opened his wallet, that he had an SS card. I have no idea if he's claiming anything and, to be honest, it's not my problem. It's just that he is so judgemental about others claiming and regularly spouts on about it.
Apologies if I sound like a d**khead. It's just the hippocracy that bothers me (if that's what it is).

I got one when I was 16 or 17 if I remember right and I've never claimed anything. I also never carry the thing around with me, I think it's in my parents house stuck in a cupboard somewhere. Do you actually need it for anything?

Need it to claim SW payment at An Post and to sign on, if lost they can issue you with a temporary one until you get a new one. I got mine when I was about 17 I think, don't remember applying for it, just arrived in the post. Having one doesn't mean you are claiming benifits.

    Hi AC,

You're exactly why I'm asking this. Why do you have a SS card? I don't want to be part of a judgemental-card brigade. It's just that my house-mate can be judgemental about those less well off while he possesses a card himself.

As far as I can tell, he doesn't claim DOLE (but I'm not sure), but he has one of of these cards. I have been on the receiving end of such payments and have am eternally gratefully.

Same as yourself, mine just came in the post one day.

    Sorry, hasty response.

I have been on the receiving end of such payments and am eternally grateful.

Just to reiterate, I have no problem whatsoever with social security payments. I have paid my taxes and feel no guilt receiving SS payments. I am currently job seeking and want to get back to being a tax-payer. It's my flatmate's arrogance which annoys me. Just to get back to my original question, why does he have an SS card?

Like myself and IPam, he probably just got it in the post one day.

AFAIK everyone gets one at about 17/18. If not everyone it may be when you start your first tax paying job. Like we both already said, we just got them, there was no reason for it**, just turned up in the post.

edit: **when I say no reason I mean I wasnt claiming SW at 17, so for me, there was no reason to have it, I just did.

Either I don't understand the question or you don't understand the answer

you asked why would someone have a SW card, the white one.

Answer: the card is used to collect SW payments and to sign on, I'm sure there are other uses such as using it to remember your PPS number

Now, important part.... Just because someone has one of these cards does not mean they collect benifits

Edit: another edit, age doesn't matter, anyone of any age above 16 afaik can have one of these cards

Sorry. Just to get back to my original question. Why does my house-mate have access to a social-security card?

Sorry I'm out, I really can't explain it any clearer, maybe someone else can

That's my original question. If he's not claiming then why does he have a card?

So he has access to the details of all those on Benefits payments.

Or as was previously stated, he was issued with one when he reached the working age and he decided the best place to store it was his wallet.

Having a card does NOT mean that he is claiming any state benefits, just as having a driving licence does not mean that the holder has a car.

It could be that, as has already been mentioned that he was issued with one without applying for one, just like many others. It could be that he has at some stage in his life claimed state benefits - but not necessarily.

The simplest explanation is that he has a card because he has a PPS number.

There's no point in reading anything into it. Why don't you just ask him?

Thank you Jeckle. Someone here finally getting where I'm coming from. He's a weird guy who doesn't do 'government interaction'. He's someone who would be proud of never having claimed anything from anyone. That's why I'm asking about the card. Some posters seem to imply that all PPS number holders should have one of these cards (insultingly so); I have a PPS number but don't have a card.
And that's my question. If he claims to have never claimed anything from anyone (and boy does he) why does he have one?

There was a stage where everyone received the card when they turned 17 or so. You are supposed to keep this card in a safe place and keep it in case you ever needed to claim.
They stopped issuing them automatically then, and are now issued if you need it for claiming.
Thread locked as it is going round in circles. It has been explained to you numerous times that he may have been issued it automatically. There are only so many ways you can say this. If you really want to know, ask your housemate.
