stumbled across the verve single for 'sonnet' the other day, and forgot how much i loved the b-side 'lord i guess i'll never know'. better than alot of the songs that made it onto urban hymes imo. seeing as b-sides are in danger of becoming extinct, was wondering if anyone knew of any other hidden gems by bands that people might not be aware of?

The Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure have some excellent b-sides as well as rarities and unreleased songs.

They have even better b-sides but damn EMI seem to have got tons of Pumpkins videos removed. This song is great though, it has a really mellow and subdued feel to it and it sounds a million miles away from the more commercial sounds of '1979' and 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings'.

I genuinely think '2 Late' is one of The Cure's best songs. Robert Smith originally thought that '2 Late' was going to be a single, but as the development of Disintegration took on a life of it's own '2 Late' just didn't fit into the sound of the album so it was included as the b-side to 'Lovesong' instead. One of the best b-sides I've ever heard.

I agree with earlier comments about The Beatles' Rain (possibly the best b-side ever) and Smashing Pumpkins around the Mellon Collie era were topnotch - The Aeroplane Flies High box set is excellent.

Before the wheels fell off the wagon, Oasis were relogating songs that other bands would kill for to mere b-side status. The purple patch would include the Whatever CD single (four non-album tracks) and most of the Morning Glory singles. Acquisesce, Rockin' Chair, Step Out: all gems.

Teenage Fanclub had some killer b-sides on the singles from Grand Prix and Songs from Northern Britain. Most of their singles were four tracks and had the old marketing trick of two different CD singles, so one release could get you six "new" songs. The majority of their non-album tracks around that time were total winners, not least a cracking cover of Buffalo Springfield's Burned.

Frequently overlooked. Glorious in particular is arguably one of Muses best songs, possibly the last great song they'll ever have written given their current track record.

as has been said, smashing pumpkins had some amazing b-sides, the aeroplane flies high boxset is full of gems, but this one stands out for me, corgan still plays it live to this day.

Was originally set to make the Joshua Tree, ended up not being quite ready and was used as a B-side for With or Without You I believe. Fantastic tune. Probably my favourite U2 song. Atmospheric, poetic. Always makes me think of views of Dublin city.

There were a lot of great outtakes from the Joshua Tree, which made b-sides.
Silver and Gold and the original version of Sweetest Thing (much better than the remake years later) appeared as the B Side of ''Where the Streets have No Name'.
