Many admire the work the U2 frontman has
done for the Third World, many more question
the fact he preaches from atop a mountain of
money, but there can no longer be any argument when a child’s religion book says he is a
    prophet of God.
According to the schoolbook Alive 07, part of
the ifth class religion syllabus, the singer ranks
among Gandhi and Sister Veronica, the founder
of Kilkenny’s Aislinn Centre, as a modern day
    prophet.
A listener to the Ray D’Arcy Show on Today
FM contacted the station telling how his tenyear-old son sought
help with his homework, needing ten facts
    about ‘the Prophet
    Bono’.
    ‘I thought he was
    joking and then did a
    search if there was a
    prophet called Bono,
    but, alas, it is actually
Bono,’ Les McClarence from Killarney said.
    ‘I cannot believe this
is in the religion book – Bono is there in print
alongside Mother Teresa as a modern-day
    prophet.’
The book’s publisher, Veritas, admitted the
text, last published in 2003, is ‘quite old’, but
    stands by Bono’s inclusion.
Marketing manager Derek Byrne said the
book’s teacher notes explain that there are three
deinitions of ‘prophet’ in religious teaching.
‘One is the Old Testament, an example would
be Moses, where God speaks to somebody; In
the New Testamant there’s God speaking to Jesus and then Jesus telling and showing people
what to do; and then the modern prophet is a
person who re-enacts what Jesus did and stands
up for the poor and the downtrodden, which is
where Bono could be igured into this.

He is claiming this because maybe prophets are exempt from paying a fair tax.

I prophesise that he's going to write a book. The title will be: "Do like I say, not like I do.":)

Bono needs to be teabagged by a rhino. Animal cruelty, perhaps, but it just might shut his hypocritical gob for a while anyway.:cool:

Anyone can be a prophet of god, it isn't hard. you just need absolutely no shame.

somehow I don't think even an ego as big as bonos would be happy about this though.

What ever way other threads were around it, I somehow managed to read that title as "BONO a modern powerplant?"

A lover of the poor as he sits on half a billion euro or so while people starve to death all over the world and as he dodges tax in the country he lives that's seeing swinging cuts to the welfare payments for the unemployed.

All hail Bono, the biggest fecking hypocrite and egomaniac I've ever clapped eyes on...

Who is this Bono I keep hearing of?

EDIT: Oh wait you mean O-nob!? That's his real name

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,797 ✭✭✭✭hatrickpatrick

Disclaimer: I absolutely love U2 and have no problems whatsoever with any of them.

But the word "prophet" usually implies someone who has either revealed new things to the world, or else (more commonly) predicted future events.

Has Bono done either? He's certainly done a lot for religion and the third world but does that make him a prophet, per se?

In other words: My understanding of the word "prophet" is of someone who reveals new information, usually in the form of predictions about future events. Has Bono ever even claimed to have done this...?

Can someone please ask Bonorman who he thinks is gonna win the presidency

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,015 ✭✭✭CreepingDeath

Bono could've just sat back and enjoyed his money, relaxing in his mansion.

Instead he goes out and tries to help others.
Maybe he's just filling in the time, but it raises awareness of various issues.

I don't see why there's a backlash against him anymore than there would be against the CEO of a company. He has accountants maximising his income,
that's what they're meant to do.

It's classic Irish begrudgery at it's worse.

I don't hate Bono. It's just the complete absence of any modesty that grates. :D

I am a big U2 fan I have all their albums and seen most of their concerts, I have been with them since their beginning.

But that does not mean I worship Bono, he is only a singer, a musician, that does not make him any wiser.

Now if he wants to tell us the people and the powerful as to what they SHOULD be doing with their money to make a better and fairer world, that is fine. But if he as an individual wants to place his mountain of money in off shore accounts to dodge paying a fair tax in his home and stricken state, that is gross hypocrisy and he can fkuc off.

But I will still buy his next album and go to his concert so I suppose I am a hypocrite as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,015 ✭✭✭CreepingDeath

He's lobbying countries to make a change, which has a much bigger impact than an individual can personally make.

He has zero authority, so people/governments can take or leave his advice.
The fact that he gains an audience with people in power means they want to listen, even if it's just a publicity stunt on both sides, it may bring benefit to others from it.

If you're starving, you don't care how the food trucks arrive and who takes the credit for it.
