Speeding Fine - Postal Service Warning

Just to warn people not to use the postal service for Speeding Fines. I got a speeding fine of €80 about two months ago. Didnt have time with my work to get to the post office to pay so filled out the return letter with my credit card details and sent the letter back the next day. Then this week I recieved a letter of receipt for €120 with details that they received payment on the 14-10-2011. I rang them this morning and they said that it took 58 days to pay and it is nothing to do with them that I would have to take it up with An Post. I asked if they could check the date stamp on the letter I sent and they said that they do not have access to it. Its a joke. I had no problem in paying the €80 fine as I was in the wrong but I cant get over being fined an extra €40 because the letter of payment was delayed outside my control and I wasnt aware of it!

Use registered post maybe, it might cost you €5 but at least you have something to prove you sent it.

get onto An Post and demand they pay the full fine - if it was their fault they should be punished for not supplying the service they claim to do.

if it was an admin error then its not your fault - if you do not get any satisfaction from An Post and if you feel very strongly that you should not have been forced to pay the extra get onto a solicitor and seek advice (which will mean having to goto small claims court - something which you can do without a solicitor.)

I don't think An Post guarantee any time frame for normal post do they?

they do claim within a few days - its unrealistic to expect that they will be as late as the OP claims.

if they did the same to all of their customers they would be out of business quite quickly.

You should have played the same trick when they sent you the letter. Fine? What fine?

    Followed by summons? What summons?

FFS lads, the obligation is to pay the fine, not to post the letter. It's unfortunate, but that's what registered postal services are for.

    There's another possibility.
The letter was delivered on time and was misplaced/forgotten about/fell between the cracks in the office.
It was then discovered and processed.

Take your finger off the trigger and don't immediately blame An Post as you cannot be sure what transpired and there is more than one possibility.

Was the post system that failed. I posted a letter to the bank at same time and they said that letter was delayed as well. If anything I thought I would have been warned that the payment not been received before being fined more.
