on top of the unusual design, the build evolves in different stages with rooms added as time goes by.
would he have made numerous separate applications at every stage of extension? ....or could he have had special permission to experiment with the building process because he is a renowned architect?

special permission??? Surely everyone would then cry out over that and want a go themselves??

I.M.O if it is not in compliance with building regs/guidance etc they should not get it.

    My 2c anyway!

in his defence look at the foliage/cover around the house. most people applying for PP in Ireland go for the green field without even a ditch, never mind a spilt level into the hill..
the build evolves in different stages with rooms added as time goes by.
you generally have five years from the time of PP to build
would he have made numerous separate applications at every stage of extension?
you can extend 40msq to rear of house without planning..
....or could he have had special permission to experiment with the building process because he is a renowned architect?
    very doubtful

there is no reason anyone cant do this or an interesting modern design, once they have a suitable site, and build a good rapport and visual explanation in the application.. the answer here is more like that the guy spends enough time on the design and then on the application..

as an aside to this have you seen his '25g proposed for everyone house', looks a lot like what Walter Segal was suggesting since the 70's...

If a design is 'bold' or 'innovative' you will often find planners more receptive to giving planning permission where the standard bungalow bliss or mock georgian style house would not have a chance of getting permission.

Why not contact the architect directly ?

I am sure he will be willing to let you know how he approached the planning process.
