Winter Golf Today (tips to stay warm)

I'm playing winter golf this year for the first time in over 15 years. I think it is the only way for me to move on with my game. (want to start breaking 80 again).

What a stunning day for golf today , bit of wind , trying some new stuff and happy with the day.

Had a hat , vest, long socks, long sleeves and did the job. Was not even that bad but could still feel the cold when sun went in. I'm a bit soft(a dub too). But , i'd imagine lads on here have great tips and gear. The clothing has moved on from when I was last at this.

I see loads of lads with a sort of full body undergear top? what is this is it any good ? what makes ? , any other tips. Think I have poor circulation or just a cold soft lad.

when playing winter league last year i noticed that wearing lots of light layers kept me warm without effecting my swing (not that my swing is great anyway!)

Have a longsleeve t-shirt, polo shirt and dunlop windbreaker. Hardest thing do was keep hands warm.

    Thanks Lads,

    Sounds obvious.

But taking the gloves on and off would do me head in, but cold would do me head in more I guess. To live in Spain.

same here, i have plenty of pairs of proper winter gloves that i use on the motorbike but they are a pain taking on and off so many times.

there was a lad there last year that had a pair of what can only be described as adult mittens!! no individual fingers only one big and one for the thumb if you know what i mean. He was able to leave his golf glove on when using them. They looked brutal though!!!!

You can even get golf mittens that attach to your cart in the push position if you follow me. When you go to push your cart your hands slip into the mittens. Handy that !!!

A small flask full a bovril with a dash of tebasco. amazing stuff on the 10th tee box on a cold day.

Use a base layer anyway when it gets cooler. I have a couple of helly hansen ones and the mock turtle (can you dig it?) by underarmour is pretty common and very good. Wear the baselayer against the skin and not many layers over it because they are warm. They are not restrictive and are tight fitting.

You can get a baselayer for under the trousers too but haven't used one - just use the waterproofs over the trousers to keep warm (mine are a sunderland pair which are quite warm) & dry in my case.

For gloves, go to TKMaxx for example and pick up a pair of ski mitts which are not too difficult to deal with. Of course they are somewhat of a nuisance to have to take on and off but I know that I can't play at all when my hands lose feel from cold so they are a must for me. Mine are Reusch and cost about €20.

Stick a decent hat on yer noggin and yer sorted. Don't necessarily look for 'golf' specific brands. Outdoor shops have been doing this stuff for years...

look good? these yoke were hilarious looking!! I'm all on for keeping warm but couldn't bring myself to wear them!!

I was expecting them to have a string attached to both that you put inside your jumper and leave dangling when not using them!!!!:D:D

I'm on my second pair of mitts and they are the best money I ever spent on golf - fleece lined so they keep your hands nice and cosy. I tihnk they look fine, not that that is a priority! Combined with a decent baselayer and waterproof bottoms (as PhilipMarlowe recommended) and you'll feel a lot more comfortable as the temps plummet

We are getting into the nitty gritty now, are these undergarments full or just upper body ?

I'm going to be like a man going up Everest

    Try these :

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Mens-Brushed-Thermal-Underwear-Short-Sleeve-T-Shirt-Vests-long-johns-/330626066059?pt=UK_Men_s_Underwear&var=&hash=item7dbd3d52f0

Thermal Long Johns are essential along with thermal vests. Amazing heat retention. Thermal socks also. As for gloves - mittens are a must. Gloves with fingers take too long to put on and take off regularly. A good monkey hat for the noggin

corded trousers and a snood are a must along with the canterbury or under armour vests. them galvin green fleece jackets are cosy as well

In relation to keeping your hands warm - the Pro shop in my club sells these during the winter:

    http://www.completeoutdoors.co.uk/MyCoal-Disposable-Hand-Warmers

I find them excellent, the come in packs of two so you can out one in each pocket and they last for the full round.

They're not re-usable but they only cost €3 or so - and I find them well worth it if it's particularly cold any morning.

Eat porridge before leaving for golf
Thermal leggings under light waterproof pants
Thermal vest under long sleeve polo under sleeveless sweater under windstopper which usually is removed after a few holes as the thermals will have you boiling
    Wooly cap and mittens
Have a few reusable heat packs too in the bag for the really cold mornings ......overkill ??

you could probably put a small fire in a wheelbarrow to bring around with you to warm up in between holes :D or maybe some heated socks http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=heated+socks&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3458255639209744913&sa=X&ei=evGfTt-vBdGZhQeNoMjWBA&ved=0CH4Q8wIwAQ#

I have the Boston version of this and i think it's class. I think there's nothing worse than freezing hands when trying to swing a golf club. I also use it during work time in the winter as i work outdoors a lot.

I got a present of the zippo handwarmer a few years ago. they re great. It looks like a big cigarette lighter. You pour lighter fluid into it and light it . stays going for about 6 or 7 hours ( the pace of play is shocking in our place :D ) comes with a pouch as it would get too hot to hold.

    They look dangerous.

I suppose that all depends on what part of the body that needs warming up:p.
