Shower Trap

    Hi,
I've just started using an ensuite in my new house and there seems to be a smell coming from the shower trap. I've more investigation to do but, my question for the minute is simply should there be water left in the shower trap or should it all run out? I've got the stainless steel gulley type set into a mosaic tiled/wet floor and with the grill taken off there's water left in the gulley, the smell is coming from here. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Clint

Yes, water should remain in the trap, they tend to get smelly over time.
Hot water (not boiling) and household cleaner used with a small stiff bristle brush should clean it out for you.

The wind is creating enough draw to overcome the trap and sucking the water out. Is the soil vent uncapped.

Thanks. I'm still not sure, I have internal soil pipes which are vented thru a slate in the roof. My plumber reckons that as they are on the first floor, the heating is evaporating the water from the trap...
