Would an exception to the 25 and over rule be made?

    Just a thought here.

After the summer of searching my Dad finally bought a 1975 Rover P6 3500.

    Its a lovely car!

He was thinking of putting myself onto the insurance as its kind of a father and son thing :D

Anyway, he insured it with FBD Classic Insurance.

The thing is, I am currently insuring my own car with FBD and I'm 21 with 3 years no claims.

I know the simplest thing would be to ring them but just want to see do I stand a chance?

I know the 25 year old rule is to stop young fella's getting cheap insurance on their dads classic for them to use as a daily but seeing as FBD can see I have a policy already with them, that rules me out of that loophole.

    What do you's think?

    Here's a pic:

Do you have driving other cars on your own policy ?

Nope, I don't have open drive unfortunately.

I'd be willing to pay whatever it is for a classic policy with FBD (€200/€300) but there's no way I'd take out a full €1000+ policy as I already have one

i doubt they'd do it.Been tryiong for years for my lad.

Would your existing policy not cover you to drive other peoples cars? Probably have more luck changing your policy this way if you can and it would almost certainly be cheaper than your dad adding you to the classic policy if he could.

PS isnt open drive so that anyone can drive YOUR car?

I love P6's... and that looks like a very nice one. I notice some nice details too like it still has the sills in the huntsman colour to match the roof.

    Nice.. really nice.

Yep, driving other people's cars is standard with Quinn, don't know about FBD, have a look in the policy booklet as there are often restrictions, I know I can't drive a commercial or any vehicle owned by my employer.

Odd indeed, I thought it might be the same one as not many folk get plates made in that non-period style, for that year. Maybe the same fella imported both cars

Axa also have driving of other cars (third party cover) covered on comprehensive policies, I don't think they allow it on TPFT for some reason or at least don't do it as standard.

They also list "open drive" or "open driving" can't remember exactly which name it has. That is for other people, over 25, being able to drive your car.

Sorry to not be able to help properly with the original question though. Don't think classic insurance for someone under 25 is possible at the moment, as corktina was saying he's tried a lot of times to get his son put on a classic policy to drive some of his classics. I tried myself in my own case and wasn't able to either (for myself)

    Nice car W.Shakes

    Have one of these myself.

These were the BMW M5 of their day.

A truly fast luxury express, with tidy handling, once you get used to the body roll!

They're not built like most cars, in that they're not 'seperate chassis' or monocque in their construction.

All the external panels, including the roof panel are bolted onto a kind of 'space-frame', sometimes refered to as the base unit.

The Citroen DS is the only other car to share this type of construction.

This is why the P6 is sometimes referred to as the 'British Citroen'.

Can't help with the insurance issue though, but I'm sure there's got to be some way round it..

    What i suggest is :

Find out if your insurance company on your own car do 3rd party extension. (quinn and axa definatly do)

If it does, and your dads car is taxed and insured , then you will be able to drive it.

But if you crash you wont get a cent.

The terms of the 3rd party extension is that the other car cant be in your name, and MUST be taxed and tested. It DOES'NT have to be insured but obviously it would be better having a disc in the screen.

Don't mind at all. No post processing and used a Fuji Finepix J120.

(I don't have long legs either, was stuck in traffic so wound the window down of the lorry I was in)
