    Ah sh1t!!!!!

    Any ideas on what'll happen?

    Is Ellenberger fit?
Maybe they could stick him in against Condit and bump BJ v Diaz to main event??
    Maybe Koscheck if he's fit?

Feel sorry for Condit. One minute he's fighting BJ, then GSP, now neither!

Diaz v Penn is now the confirmed main event!

Condit wont fight again until GSP is back from injury.

It's GSP'S knee. We will sit Carlos to wait for GSP. It's looking so far like he could be ready in a couple months. Still early to tell tho

Georges St-Pierre has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 137 title fight against Carlos Condit due to a knee injury suffered in training on Tuesday, MMA Fighting has confirmed with St-Pierre's head trainer Firas Zahabi.

UFC president Dana White broke the news earlier in the day via Twitter.

According to White, who spoke to MMAFighting.com via text message after making the announcement, Nick Diaz vs. BJ Penn will now main event next week's pay-per-view event from Las Vegas. Carlos Condit has been removed from the card, and according to Condit's manager Malki Kawa, Condit will receive his title shot against GSP as soon as the champion is cleared to fight again.

"He's out for a month," Zahabi said of GSP. "I would say at least a month he can't train. So unfortunately, he's out of the fight, that's for sure.

"He's not in any condition to fight, that's for sure. No doctor will clear him."

@SharieSTL @joshkoscheck gotta respect Kos offering to fight Condit on a week notice. I respect the **** outta u Josh! He's waitin 4 GSP tho

Would it not be fairer though if Condit had to fight somebody else first? I mean he was just gifted the fight in the first place after the Diaz fiasco. Although I know the UFC wouldn't wanna have GSP v Koscheck again should he beat him.

I agree with you, I mean Carlos was somewhat lucky to get the title shot I don't see why it has to be binding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭El Guapo!

Exactly. I was happy for Condit to get a shot because I like him as a fighter. But at the end of the day he was just handed the fight.

That's why I suggested Ellenberger first. I know Condit already beat Ellenberger a while back but it was a split decision and Ellenberger did just beat Shields who recently had a title shot so I think this fight might make a bit of sense. And it would avoid having GSP v Koscheck 3.

Damn, I was looking forward to some GSP action. Hope he's better soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭pauldoo

i think koscheck will have to go on a serious run to get a third shot at GSP, or maybe step up if someone gets injured at late notice.

Diaz's camp are looking for a 5 rounder now, cant see BJ agreeing, considering his cardio issues in the past

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 397 ✭✭fightireland

No shock in Diaz's cmap looking for a 5 rounder - fair chance it could happen too.

Either way I think BJ should aim to stop Diaz early - he will arguable in gas in the 3rd anway :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

It would be a real bad move on BJ's part to accept a 5 rounder, doubt he would and UFC can't force him too as surely would be a breach of the Fight Contract BJ signed.

As for Kos, it makes sense that he offered to fight Condit, and don't be falling for all this 'took the fight on 1 weeks' notice' , 'Hardly trained' etc bollox

Kos would have been training for this, with 4 fighters at 170lb taking up the top 4 slots on the card there was always the chance 1 would get injured.

This time Kos was lucky and unlucky, lucky that GSP got injured, unlucky that Condit refused the fight

This is true, but would the UFC really have put that fight together?
If Kos beat him then the UFC would have no option but to put Kos up against GSP again, and thats a fight that nobody wants to see again.
I think it was probably better for Kos that he didn't get the fight because, in my opinion, his only chance of getting the belt at 170 is becoming the no1 contender and hoping GSP loses the title to Condit, and then maybe he'd have a better chance against him.
That's also another reason why I think it would've been fairer to match Condit with Ellenberger rather than let him sit and wait for GSP.

Think its bad for Condit to wait, look what happened to Rashad after waiting.
If they had of put Kos in and he beat condit don't think that makes him No.1 condender, he could have fought winner of Diaz-Penn or even Ellenberger next.
Leaving GSP back to fight Condit if he had won or Diaz(if he won)

    Alot of IF's I know.

But if Conduit loses he lsoes his shot.

No this isn't the case. They could put someone else in. I mean, Pettis jumped in against guida and they didn't have to give the shot to Guida next (although he's a strong possibility).

Kos will never fight GSP again IMO.

For me, I don't think there's any guarantee Condit even gets the next shot. I mean, he didn't exactly fight his way into No.1 contendership in the first place.

Should Diaz do to BJ what his brother did to Gomi, Dana would be crazy not to give him the next shot.

Tough luck for Condit, but he can hardly complain,. Easy come easy go!

"I'm not going to lie – I cried yesterday," St-Pierre said. "I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight.

"Now all the pressure is off, I feel much better. I'm going to do some rehab, maybe take a vacation because I went through a lot. It's not only the fight, it's all the training camp, I went through a lot of stuff. I need to reset the whole thing again and I'll be ready for the next one."

While the event has yet to be made official, the UFC has for the past several years put on a major event during Super Bowl weekend, which would appear to fit St-Pierre's timetable.

I am a huge GSP fan, but this sounds like a serious cop out.

    Disappointing.

I don't think that's fair. The man was obviously going through some mental issues due to the overwhelming pressure. The injuries sustained by fighters can be psychological as well as physical. As he said he'll take his rest and get back into it full swing when he's recovered.

Well the champ should be able for psychological pressure. They're not invincible and injuries happen but they shouldn't be copping out on the mental side. (not that GSP is)

i know these are some big ifs but what if the gsp conduit fight is superbowl weekend and its the co main with a possible silva sonnen rematch, how amazing would that be.

Of course he should be able for psychological pressure but what if he has an underlying mental health problem that just can't be helped. Someone like Carwin or Lesnar have their own underlying physical problems which force them out so why is it when GSP says he is glad the fight isn't going ahead and be able to take a break because his head isn't in the right place is he "copping out"? If he's not ready physically he wouldn't fight and if he's not ready mentally he shouldn't fight.

Great interview with CroCop. Seems really honest about everything and Id love to see him go out winning
Mirko Filipovic: I Want to Prove to Everybody That I'm Still 'Cro Cop'

Mirko Filipovic is convinced that his career nearly came to an end on Thursday morning. Forget the fights. Forget the bloody battles he's been in, the knockouts he's suffered, the countless training sessions he's suffered through. This was serious.

The Croatian heavyweight, the Pride legend and veteran of nearly 40 MMA bouts, the great "Cro Cop" was nearly done in by a couple of stairs.

In his defense, the stairs were wet. It was raining out and he was headed off to training, but as he bounded down the stairs his foot hit a wet spot and he almost went down hard.

"I can't believe I didn't fall. I cannot remember when I was so scared," he said. "I could have broken my spine just like that. My foot slipped on the stairs because it was wet, and I was shaking for five minutes because I was so close, and I was so happy."

For Filipovic, the lesson in all this was clear right away. He's known his whole career that, in this sport, it could all be over in an instant. But it's one thing to know it intellectually or theoretically, and another to feel that fluttering fear that comes when your feet slide out from under you -- that irrational, trembling panic. He got the message: you're on borrowed time, pal.

For the 37-year-old Cro Cop, it won't necessarily take a freak injury to push him the rest of the way out of the sport. It could be as simple as getting beat by Roy Nelson at UFC 137 next Saturday night, and he knows it.

On this subject, Filipovic does not mince words. "I must win this fight," he said over and over again. "...I will have to beat him, and I will do it. I trained six months for this fight. I will do it."

But it's not because, if he loses a third straight fight in the Octagon, he almost certainly will not get a new contract with the UFC. Even if he wins, that contract isn't guaranteed since, as he put it, "First I have to beat Roy Nelson. And second, we have to make a deal."

It's not just his UFC future that's at stake, however. And it's not all about money, though, sure, he likes the money and, like any fighter, would prefer to make as much as possible before the ride ends for good. But for the man who has accomplished just about everything a person can in this sport, the stakes are different now.

"Some people, many people, buried me alive because I lost twice in a row," he said. "I just want to prove to everybody that I'm still Cro Cop. ...I want to raise from the grave. That's what I want to prove to everybody. That's my motivation."

But then, say he beats Nelson. Then what?

For starters, Filipovic said, there are all the wonderful little moments that come with a victory, moments he's learned to savor like the last few bites of a great meal.

"I want to feel that feeling when the referee raises my hand. I want to take that shower -- it's a special moment for me, taking that shower after my victory, and I'm so happy. I go back to the hotel and the next day I'm so happy. I don't even think about [money] until the UFC bookkeeper calls me a few days later to transfer the money."

But it's not just the temporary joy or the glory he's chasing, he said. He's also in search of a fitting end to a great career, whatever that would look like at this point.

"I want to retire as the old Cro Cop. I don't know if I will be able to do it, but I will die trying. Nothing is hard for me. I will die trying."

It's a long way from the reasons he started this in the first place. Back in 1996, two years after his father died and "and left me and my mother all alone without a dollar in our pocket," the 21-year-old Filipovic got his start in K-1 kickboxing tournaments.

"It was the only way to drag me and my mother out of misery. That's how I started. I wanted to beat people because I wanted to get more and more money to ensure financial independence for me and for my family. That's all."

The fame? The attention? He never wanted any of that. In his perfect world, he could fight and get paid without anyone knowing him once he left the cage.

"If somebody recognize me or they don't recognize me on the street, I don't care. I would prefer that they, don't recognize me. Unfortunately, in my country everybody recognize me. I cannot hide, but it's hard to live without privacy."

Yet that's exactly what happened shortly after he moved from kickboxing into MMA and went on to become one of the sport's most iconic heavyweights. From Japan to the U.S., Cro Cop was a known man. But as time passed and his contemporaries got picked off one by one, Filipovic saw for himself how this sport can use up and discard a person -- even the great ones.

"Look at Fedor [Emelianenko]," he said. "Fedor was untouchable until one year ago, and today nobody's talking about him. He lost three times in a row. He was a great champion, great fighter, but he lost three times in a row and nobody talks about him. Only the fans who followed him his whole career respect what he did with his career, but that's the name of the game. I don't want it to happen to me."

In Filipovic's mind, at least, beating Nelson on October 29 is the only way to avoid the same fate as his old rival Fedor. That's why he put everything he had into preparing for this fight, he said, even bringing out another former opponent -- fellow UFC heavyweight Pat Barry -- to give him some quality sparring sessions.

"And believe me," he said, "it was wild sparring."

But no matter what he's done in the weeks leading up to this fight, he can't guarantee the outcome. He can't simply will his way to a victory that will keep his career and his name in the sport alive.

Losing remains a distinct possibility, and if it happens, he said, all he can do is "say to people, 'I apologize, and I'm sorry I wast[ed] your time.' That's all I can say and that's exactly what I will say. I will disappear from the UFC and I will apologize, first to the headquarters of the UFC, because I was treated like a king, I was paid well, and unfortunately I didn't justify the treatment. I didn't justify the treatment. I don't want live on an old glory. That's why, believe me, I trained really hard for this fight."

Will it be enough to win? Better yet, if he does win, if "the old Cro Cop" comes back even for just one night in October, will that be enough? Once you're reminded how great victory feels, and once you've proved that you're still capable of achieving it, how do you stop chasing it? How do you simultaneously become the person you used to be, yet not continue doing what he would have done? And who was that person, anyway? And where did he go?

Cop out? Sounds like human nature to me. How would it be a cop out?

The guy is the best of the best in his field, a field which is becoming one of the biggest sports in the world. He's literally the poster boy and all of the pressure is on him.

If he's not under mental pressure, there's something wrong!

just watched the run up, really looking forward to this card. BJ v Diaz will be class, hard to pick a winner, i think i would favour Diaz because of the size difference. Mittrione has his work cut out. Nelson fight should be good.

Nelson said he lost some weight, his comment was something along the lines ive "ive lost some weight, im roy 2.0, like windows, hopefully not Vista" haha

Yeah Spike have been advertising it as their fight so couldn't change it. Can't wait for spike to be over hopefully ESPN will have the prelim hour again before the main show. Guess I'll watch it online the next day.

Heard Gracie saying Siver would be a good opponent for Nate Diaz, that would be some standup war. Siver might be ahead of him in the pecking order and though so might want to look forward not back.
