As a newbie to SKY satellite, what exactly will this mean for the user? if any!

Presumably more bandwidth and more HD channels etc coming on board? Any new FTA channels?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

It will allow for more FTA channels due to the tight beam. Channel 4 will be adding more FTA channels as will Channel 5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,048 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

    How tight is the beam?

Presumably designed to cover the UK ...... will it reach South West Ireland? ....... not that I live there .... just wondering about this 'narrow beam' I have seen referenced a few times.

when can we expext channels from this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭homer911

There's some talk of Channel 4 using it for a HD version of Film4 or E4, probably before Christmas..

Hi, can anyone let us know can we use this? what will it give us that we currently do not have?

For example, I have a VU Duo STB with both sat tuners cables to my dish which is an old Sky install 28.2E. So how to add this satellite? do I need to sacrifice one of my tuners to dedicate it to this sat? Do I need a new satellites.xml? What channels might I receive?

Hope this post makes sense and proves helpful to others. Many thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,854 ✭✭✭Apogee

1N is co-located with the other satellites at 28E, so they all appear as a single satellite to your dish. You can simply scan for any new transponders/frequencies manually as they become active.

It is joining the other satellites at 28.2E, so you don't have to do anything fancy to your current set up to get it. Once it starts actually transmitting some channels that are FTA, just rescan to get them either by doing a full scan for all the channels on 28.2/.5E or by adding the specific transponders/frequencies, which will no doubt be given out here on the board once they start transmitting.

Why is this of interest folks? It means nothing to the end user surely....Is it not the case that our existing TV services are gonna be beamed from a different piece of kit, a bit like RTE installing a new transmitter. Is that it? or am I missing something? and if so, who cares?

PS: I'm not being facetious here, I'm genuinely asking.

The new satellite means new capacity for the narrow beam intended to cover the UK meaning that more channels can become "freesat" and drop out of Sky encoding - for example the ch 5 add ons, Fivestar and Fiveusa. Also extra capacity for +1s and HDs.

What Marcusm said basically. More Narrow Beam Capacity, means more FTA channels, including HD channels.

Yeah but theses are free anyway, I know not freesat but fta (I think, jesus I get confused). These can be had with a sky ftv card. I have one in my stb and get these, chan5 hd, pick tv etc.

It means people don't have to bother with freesatfromsky card, and a hack for FTA receivers/ combo's. And with freesat you get the full 7 day epg for those channels. Might be no advantage to you, but it will be for a lot of people.

    Ch4 HD now broadcasting.
    11123 V 22000 2/3 8PSK.
Getting 100% signal and strength on humax.

Not everyone has a FTV card or wants to use Sky boxes. FTA means anyone can view them with any box without the need for paying for a FTV card.

I'm getting it on 11127 on AzBox super strong 100% signal. It is so strong that there is a weaker 43% signal on 11127 H but I read elsewhere that this is known as polarity crosstalk.

11.127 V would most likely be correct as this would correspond with Astra's band C plan. I'll see if I can recite them from memory...

    10.964 H, 10.979 V, 10.994 H, 11.009 V, 11.023 H, 11.038 V, 11.053 H, 11.068 V, 11.082 H, 11.097 V, 11.112 H, 11.127 V, 11.141 H, 11.156 V, 11.171 H, 11.186 V

I think that's right. If so then they're the frequencies to look out for.

Can somebody please explain (again) why the sky box can't manually tune this in as the symbol rate & fec settings for this channel can be programmed in?

    1. Because they've designed the firmware in such a way that the default channel scan is DVB-S and there's no option to change it to DVB-S2.

    2. Because "Sky care"

Channel 4 3 db stronger that 2d using promax metre. single transponder transmitting only at this time.

Does this mean a lot of transponder frequencies at 28E will change ?

I have an MVision combo box and suspect its transponder list is out of date. Is there a handy list anywhere on the web (could just edit down a Satco list but sounds like a pain TBH)

They've no reason to do it on purpose. It's a firmware bug they have now recognised. It only really affects Irish customers because UK customers already have these channels on their EPG - which is probably why it wasn't picked up in testing.

I'm sure it's probably been pointed out before.... but does anybody else love the irony of having to pay for a 'free to view' card?

The more the merrier on FTA. Long may it continue.

There was a time when the FTV cards were free - funded by the BBC I think?

I don't think it's only the UK who charge admin fees for a viewing card, I think other European countries who operate a FTV card also have a charge.

yes, the French TNTSAT/FRANSAT cards also has to be paid for.
