Work Experience

    My first post here :D
I'm in 5th year in school and in LCVP(Leaving Cert. Vocational Programme) I am required to receive work experience in order to complete the course. I've been looking around on different websites for work experience. I am hoping to get one in Dublin Airport doing anything that involves working with the airline or on the ramp. The problem is, I don't know who to contact and neither does my LCVP teacher:confused: I am happy to work in airfields like Weston or Bandonnel but it has to be located in Dublin, Louth, Meath area. Down is acceptable.

Anyone able to help me out here?

BTW the work experience starts in February, just before the mid-term.

Weston did not do work experience for insurance reasons why I enquired and I suspect the story is going to be identical elsewhere - insurance or security mean its impossible to do anything airside.

Getting an airside pass in Dublin (I've got a customer airside in Dublin T1, or at least I did, I've not checked if they've gone to the competition recently...) is awkward enough when you've got a reason to be there.

So your saying that its not possible to get a work experience placement in Weston and/or a place on ramp in Dublin Airport ?

Baldonnel are not taking any more people for work experience either, I sent an email to them about 1-2 weeks ago, and been told this
    "HI Darius,
All of our places are full for this year. if you want contact F/sgt Pat Casey Air Corps College to see if he might be able to put your name down for next year.
    Regards".

I got work experience with shannon aerospace without any problems. So you should try and contact dublin aerospace they might be able to help you.

Its not likely to be easy. I'm not saying its not *possible* but I wouldn't set your sights on getting any and end up getting nothing at all.

Try Irish Helicopters part of the PLM Dollar Group.
I got 2 weeks work experience with them for my TY/LCVP thing and it was great. Did just over 30 hours in the left hand seat of a Bolkow-105, AS350 and Bell 407 n 06

I would say your best options in dublin would be dublin aerospace, maybe try aer lingus or even cityjet would be worth a shot, I'm nearly sure they've had work experience people from schools in there before.

Maybe phrase it as non-paid work experience? Also, how much work experience are you talking about? A lot of places may not do it as by the time you're trained up, your work experience finishes?

Okay, thanks for the replies. I've contacted Dublin Aerospace last night, no word from them yet. My friend's dad worked with Aer Lingus until he retired in '08 and he says that they rarely accept work experience unless you are related to someone who works in the airline. I will try CityJet and PLM Dollar Group. ATC is something for me too as I would enjoy the basics of controlling.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

I forgot to add in, who do I contact for enquiries about ATC work experience? I don't think DAA are in charge of them...

Being over 18 probably also gets rid of a lot of red tape?

Yeah it would but I'm only 16, 17 in two months.
    Thanks for the link mate.

I've sent e-mails to CityJet, Dublin Aerospace and will give IAA a ring at the weekend. :D

Thats completely untrue about Aer Lingus. I've seen a couple of people around. Just give EI Human resources a call or email. You won't need to wait for an airside pass, You can just get an escorted pass, which you can get in less than 10 minutes.

Another idea would be to email College Ireland

    http://www.collegeireland.org/
The College Ireland initiative is the culmination of 6 years effort and development.
The genesis of College Ireland was the decision taken by IAA to form an “Education Partnership” with a 3rd. Level College back in 2004. This led to the development of aviation and transport focused diploma and degrees and the participation of staff from approximately 35 companies in these programmes.

Your career guidance/LCVP teacher could send them a official headed letter if they really wanted to impress; but an email would usually suffice.
That being said, if C.I. don't get back to you, there are plenty of links on the website to people who MIGHT.
