Netgear router issue

    Howdy folks

I have a WGR614v7 router which was supplied by UPC a few years ago when we signed up. It worked fine until about 6 months ago it started dropping the wi-fi connection at random. It wasn't very often so I put up with it, but eventually I felt motivated enough to fix it, so a few weeks ago I upgraded the firmware to the latest (2.0.30) from the netgear site. It fixed the connection issues but it created a new problem...

My housemate and I can't get an open NAT type when online gaming on the PS3. Our PS3's NAT type is 2, but in games it's always moderate. I've tried forwarding ports manually, putting the PS3 in the DMZ, disabling the SPI firewall and even turning off NAT filtering. I reset the router to factory default and set it up again, but nothing I did made a difference.

I tried a router I brought home from Japan and we had open NAT types right away. I'm totally stumped on this! What do you guys think?

By the way, I talked to UPC and they said they don't support Netgear router issues, even though they supplied it.

I submitted a ticket to them and just waiting on a response, so I figured I'd ask here too.

Is this via their own fibre powered broadband stock one, or is this a router attached as a bridge?

As we signed up a few years ago it's their old stock Netgear. They discontinued it and are now supplying a Cisco modem with built in router. Maybe this is why they don't support it anymore.

Ah, could you request a replacement from them?

When I mailed them I asked if they don't know a fix could they replace it or swap our modem and router for the Cisco, but that part was unread/ignored by them.

I suppose I should just call them directly, but I hate phone support lol.

I hear ya, I used to work in one!

I think you should to be honest you get a more direct answer and they're pretty good regarding their phone support (any time I called). Also a trick to get forwarded pretty quickly is to call in to the wrong section on purpose and they'll transfer you straight away. :pac:

Haha good tip! Netgear got back to me and we're going through some "steps". Most likely nothing will come of it, but who knows! I'll let you know how it goes.

    Cheers chin_grin.

Whoops forgot to report back. I fixed it by downgraded the firmware. No idea why it wouldn't let me downgrade the first 3 times I tried... Just magically did this time!

Download the latest firmware version from here:
    http://support.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2591

Log into your router and check the firmware version under 'router status'. Note it down then go to 'router upgrade'>choose file and upload the firmware.

You have v9 so it would have different firmware and different bugs so I wouldn't worry about the bug I was troubled with.
