Setanta O'hAilpin delisted

Saw this in The Age this morning - sad to see, but somewhat predictable. A shame though, all the same.

If he could manage to stay in the AFL, it would be nice to see him get picked up by GWS (he might have a useful hint or two for Folau) but I wouldn't mind seeing him back in the Cork GAA fold either, especially if Sean Og were to come back (though, after 7 or so years away from hurling in a football environment, football would seem the better option, but then comes the question of where to fit him in...though, Tadhg was a revelation in 09 and picked up an all star, and considering O'hAilpin would tower even over Donaghy)

A sad bottom line to the O'hAilpin 'saga' though, that the three brothers have all been treated pretty ruthlessly by their prospective clubs/panels etc

    any thoughts?

Was he not playing this season though? Up to the finals?? What are the chances he'll get picked up by someone?

He wasn't good enough, simple as that. Carlton have had a poor forward line since Fev left and he still wasn't a regular.

Surprised he lasted this long tbh.

Hard to say - GWS or Gold Coast *might* be the most likely, though there's still enough coaches around the league the are sceptical towards GAA converts.

And yeah, he played in fact very well in what turned out to be his last game, personally, I still think they made the wrong decision, but he was injury prone and terribly inconsistent. I've seen him play in person about 3 or 4 times, and he was never much good - the last time being last year when, playing full forward, he went something like 3 games without winning a single contested possession

If he was injury prone, inconsistent, and generally not good enough then how was it the wrong decision?

because Carlton needed a big ****er like him up in the front line - and when he's good, he's very good.

due to not being used to the ruthlessness of the salary cap system, i think GAA/soccer/rugby types in Ireland (Im assuming you're Irish too are you?) find it a touch cruel maybe.... just my humble opinion.

But when he's not he's horrid and it's too big a risk for a club with finals, if not Grand Final, aspirations year after year.

I'm Australian technically and work closely with an A-League club so am well up to speed on the salary cap. I don't find it cruel at all tbh.

Setanta picked up by GWS at pick 79, hope it works out for him and he gets a few good years there.

yeah he should do alright. I'd imagine they will be similar enough to GCS in that they will be very inexperienced and will be playing the older guys allt he time. If he doesnt get his game now, then there is no hope.

The only place he was going to get a gig and I still think he's average at best but good luck to him. Probably on a decent wedge up there as well.

At his best he's a very good player, pity he's pretty inconsistent and is getting on age wise. He should go ok at GWS, Sheedy will have him out on the park every week regardless of how he's playing just to look after the young lads in some sort of enforcer role :D

Very much a confidence player...when hes on form he's very effective. Hopefully his enthusiam and never say die attitude will set an example to the youg lads. I know from his time in Cork Hurling hes a great guy to have around.
