Just wondering are there any benefits in it. I guess I could understand it if there were but if it is just to have the feeling of being a cyber bouncer...pfff, don't see any attraction in doing it.

Yeah...thought so. Sorry to some of the mods, sure you're nice but I really have to question the mentality behind it.

Maybe is the bouncer power trip affect for some but I don't know why you'd do it.

Haha, never heard a mod being called a "Cyber Bouncer" before :pac: .. actually an interesting term.

But to answer your question (and im sure people will disagree with me) Mods get used. Its no different from the "intership scheme" thats getting abused at the moment.

    - Boards.ie is a business. There's people making money from it.
    - But boards content needs to moderated because if it was not the site would potentially turn people away but more importantly opens up for boards to get sued. As it has in the past.
    - So think about it this way, why pay a dozen moderators when you can get people to work for free.
    - All in all. Mods are getting used. They are maintaining the site but without the €€€.

If I created a business but didnt want to pay the people who maintain it. I am using them. Is that any different here?

In all seriousness, I find it very seldom is the "bouncer power trip", and the odd one that thinks that way usually doesn't last too long.

People usually do it because they like Boards and the idea of it for one reason or another; they're part of something, of a community if you will, whether it's in Photography or Health Sciences or a college forum or what have you, they have gotten something out of it and they're willing to give something back. And most forums are easy enough to mod, at least most of the time ... I suppose every forum has its bad days.

Those who take on forums like AH, Soccer, Politics, etc. must have a touch of the masochist about them all right! >_>

Edit: LighterGuy, there are over 400 mods on Boards! It would take far more than a dozen employees to cover moderation of the whole site. So without the voluntary mods, it just wouldn't happen at all.

Good point but you can see why people would become moderators. Take hot lips, she's pretty cool, doesn't have a power trip and just does this cause she's bored.

Other mods go on a total power trip like those bald supermarket security gaurds and boards becomes their life.

    Okay :)
So why isnt there mods who get paid tho?
Why are they all voluntary? .. if you want to say the site is so big, fair enough, but how come there is none that get paid at all? ... how comes there isnt a boards.ie mod team that DO get paid. With the voluntary mods backing up?

why is all not getting paid?

Again, because why pay when you can get work for free. No different from the internship scheme people.

There is a Boards team who are full-time and get paid, though the first of those only came on board about 2007 / 2008 I think? My memory for history is good, for dates not so much.

The site in its early days existed on a server under a desk in UCG NUIG, and *everything* to do with it was done in people's spare time. it gradually grew until it was possible to employ someone, and it has tended to grow exponentially ever since.

Nowadays there are a couple of developers, and a couple of people who work to back up the Admins and Mods ... Dav and (until recently) Darragh. Darragh has been very very recently replaced, but blessed if I can remember the name just now.

Yes but we're not talking abouts mods are we ;) :pac:
we are talking about the employment of guys who maintain the site from technical aspect. Not the mod aspect.

Maybe is the bouncer power trip affect for some but I don't know why you'd do it.

I'm sure some might do it because they like having power, and in a bunch of 400 or so, I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case. However, I'm pretty confident that people who do it, do it because they want to help build/maintain a community they have become part of. It is probably impossible for anyone to understand the reasoning unless you use this website, and others like it, as more than merely a resource. some people do it because if they didn't they think the alternative would be worse than them and would make for less of an enjoyable experience on the whole for posters.

Lots of people like to give mods grief, and complain that they are being mistreated, and I'm sure in some cases this is deserved. Mostly though it is not, and people who complain just can't live within the system (or many micro-systems) that have evolved here in the last 13 or so years. I have had my differences with a couple of mods here over the years, mostly while I was a mod myself, but on the whole, mods are absolutely essential for the running and upkeep of community forums such as this.

No, not just the technical aspect.

Anyway, this is way too serious a discussion for this hour of the morning, so I'm reverting to the standard reply!

Double-edged sword that point , yeah it may impress some potential employers but others may have a gripe with boards - I can think of several organisations that would have little love for boards.

Imagine you're at an interview and the interviewer asks you your boards name and it transpires you banned them previously

I was promised unlimited opportunities for sexual liasions by becoming a moderator but they lied......they lied !!

Imagine I was at an interview and someone asked me my boards name, full stop!

Though given that I was dubbed with this in college as a joke one night, and the "Randy" bit at least stuck in general usage, I have actually been addressed as such by former lecturers, and in the middle of a work meeting one day by someone I went to college with! >.<

EDIT: Dude, if you could only figure out which truncheon was which ... :pac:
