Sell or repair?

My mam has a 2003 Ford Fusion 1.4 petrol, Dualshift Auto. Couple of small dents but in otherwise fair condition. Just been told that it's looking like it needs a new gearbox at a cost of €1,500. Her mechanic (indy) is telling her in not so many words that in the long run, she's better off to take the hit and offload it asap.

She's basically just wondering what ye would do in the same position - what are the chances in selling the car unreparied (given an average value on Carzone of €3,000 odd for working ones, less on donedeal, and that even without the gearbox this isn't a particuarly mint example). Or should she repair it and then try to flog it, taking the €1,500 hit upfront?

Oddly, it's the same mechanic who did a clutch in my Vectra for €650 when Opel wanted €1200.

Forgot to mention he's already put a new gearbox into this car - first one failed about two years ago. Total lemon.

It's an automatic box. Supply and fit for 1500 doesn't sound crazy. Might be worth ringing a few breakers to see if you can get secondhand. Better chance of getting a secondhand box in the North or England than here - small automatics are more common there.

Get it fixed, the sell it.

A yoke like that with the gearbox banjaxed is just scrap metal value.

Autoboxes are not as cheap to fix/replace as a manual box so it is unfair to be comparing prices.

OP, an auto petrol Fusion in mint condition is difficult enough to sell as they were never popular and asking €3k for an almost 9 year old one would be wishful thinking imo, one with a knackered gearbox will be next to impossible to sell on.

As said try the UK for either a reconditioned or second hand gearbox, will be alot cheaper than buying a new one. I definately would not spend €1500 on the car, that is more than half it's market value.

    Best of luck.

I think Automatic Fusion has manual gearbox with robotized clutch mechanism.

It is worth to check with dealer for replaceable parts as mechanics may not be so familiar with this kind of boxes.
