My bro was caught drink driving the other night. Single car crash, Into a ditch. The car is in bits. Thankfully he didnt kill anyone. He got bagged is being charged and rightly so. How will this work out with insurance?? He is under some illusion that he is covered and will get the 26K paid for the car back! Surely this cant be true??? Also, how long until a court date??

I doubt they will pay out a red cent.
Also, how long until a court date??
Could be anywhere from a month to 6 months depending on local court lists.

Hi this happen to a friend of mine, and he crash outside a nightclub but didnt hurt anyone, and yes the insurance company will pay. My friend got 10 k to cover his car. The court case, depending on the guard he could be done for dangerous driving also, he will get 3 years off the road for the drink driving, and maybe a another 1 or 2 years for dangerous driving plus a big fine. He could get a good lawyer that may get him off on the dangerous driving charge, but as I said before its all up to the guard that caught him

My understanding is that being drunk is not reason for an insurer to refuse to pay out even in a single vehicle accident.

I think some insurers only cover if the driver is under the limit. I forget who but I remember seeing some T&Cs to that effect on a policy.

I imagine in practical terms they would pay out any third party liability and then attempt to reclaim that from the policy holder, and not pay out any own damage claims.

OP your brother will need to shop round for a quote even... Roughly what age was he?

Re insurance he probably will be disqualified so it wont be a concern for a while. After that he will need to shop around - few companies will even quote - and depending on his age Iv heard €6,500 quoted in the past for basic Third Party cover for a male in their twenties.

I think St. Paul / Travellers or whatever they are called now and perhaps ARB will quote so, but a good broker will be able to advise.

He should also consider the effect the value of a claim has on a future quote...
A certain insurance company that covers young drivers used to pretty much add any claim on as a loading in future years (so 10k claimed now = 5k extra the following year, 3k in year 2, 2k in year 3) unless your NCB was protected.
