+1 with charlie10,you can't go too far wrong with 32g 6's, especially in a single barreled gun like a semi or a pump. Great thing with a semi is that you can get 3 shots off in quick succession, very handy for fast, small birds. Good luck dude:-)

quote" Thanks lads shot my first pigeon end of last year with 36g 6s a bit strong I think "

you could drop them with 28g 7.5s but i like the decoy pattern out a bit and i find you would waste more 7.5s 28gs than 32g 6s so it make finacial sense to me to buy the dearer and stronger shell plus i use them on duck snipe and phesant and i can hit anything with them. so one shell does all!!

just my 2 cents not everyone may agree:cool:

36g imo is a bit much for pigeon. The same amount of powder has to push an extra 4 g of shot. It may not sound like much, but it might make the difference over a few yards. Personally,I think 6's are a bit small for mallard,I prefer 4's myself but that's just me;)but they would be grand for wigeon or teal.

I use 36g 6s all the time for woodies because I feel most confident when using them and results in more birds down so I would say use what you most confident in, more important is making sure you get them birds in to you if your decoying or study the birds where your shooting to find flight lines so you can get good and continent shots at them and shooting from flat level ground makes a massive difference, this is where and how you will find the right shells for you.
Heavy gram shells are faster than lighter gram something to consider judging distances you’re shooting ahead of birds and experimenting with grams.
When decoying I set my pattern up so I am hitting birds in flight approx 30-40 yards and find not to much damage which is great because all my kills get eating.
Getting this right to suit the spread on your shells and chocks is vital again to far away and you will only just be injuring birds to close with any cartridge with destroy your quarry not fit for consumption.
Woodies are fantastic sport but they require relentless study, if you want to get a great days sport out of them put as much effort into studying them as you can and remember they have fantastic eyesight and will turn away from any decoy pattern if they see something not right so if your decoying and you witness this go out and adjust what you think is not right and look closely at your hid also it needs to blend in with your surroundings.

Sorry if I went off the point pal just some tips I love shooting woodies myself and hope you get as much of a buzz as I do so good luck in your future adventures.
By the way great gun to be shooting them with.

Grate info and thanks the problem I have is ill be in a wood .no crops round hear . I have found a good Clearing in the wood where there seems to be a flight . So hopefully ill get a few ill be eating them too . Where can I get decoys and how do thay work iv never seen before

I cut my teeth the same way roost shooting with the old man great craic moved on to decoying which is done over crops not in wood and to be honest it can get expensive with all the bits and pieces you pick up but it can also be done on a budget, I would say you should if you can pick up some cheep plastic flappers they are hollow shells of woodies that come with a plastic stake and the are designed to catch the wind and rock slightly giving some movement, they are cheep enough and very light to carry you can pick them up on line or any shooting shop, the other thing you can do is use dead birds from your roost shooting small sticks to elevate the head so they don’t look so dead lol.
Don’t have all the heads up high or this will look like all you decoys are getting ready to take flight and this will put off any birds looking to come in.
You need to be decoying over what birds are feeding on this is 90% of it does not work just putting decoys out in a field and hoping, so you will need to find somewhere the birds are feeding this means farmland you need to ask for permission can not stress how important this is and if you are told no leave it, do not go on some ones land with out permission! And tell the land owner what you intend to shoot as most land holds a mixed bag the land owner might only want the woodies and/or rabbits shot respect this. remember woodies do a lot of damage to crops so they cost farmers money so they are most likely ok with this as long as you respect the “rules” above and don’t leave your emptys around.
Sorry pal gone off the point just letting you know as this is what you will be progressing to if you get the bug for woodies.
Look up decoying on the net loads there but study is key.
    Hope this helps.

7 are probably a little on the light side.

Alphamax 4's & 5's for me for the pheasants and 6's for crows and pigeons.

    4 or 5s for duck
    7s 32g phessies
Everything else what every is the cheapest, I usually buy a slab of 7 28g of the clay shoot beside me pretty cheap, no problem with feather or fur.
