A bid is being made to rename Cork Airport as Rory Gallagher Airport. A petition is being delivered to the DAA on wedensday, and a copy also to Leo Veradker. This is reported in tonight's Evening Echo, it dos'nt state who is behind the renaming attempt or give any other information. Typical sloppy reporting one come's to expect from the Echo.

Wouldn't be in favour of re-naming the airport at all, leave as is imo. In any case can't see a link with RG and the airport, only similiar PR stunt was re-naming the Liverpool airport after JL. Waste of public money

I agree,it is a PR stunt, by whom I'd like to know, also don't forget George Best Airport.

Yes, very sloppy reporting, ten seconds Googling gave me this with the original petitioner's name and email at the bottom of the page.

Don't see the point myself, as others have said, leave as is.

    2 questions come to mind:

    1) Why do people want to name an airport after someone who was supposedly afraid to fly

    2) Whats with this new obsession of wanting to rename airports in this country. First Dublin, now Cork, which airport is next?

    Los Angeles airport is LAX.

    Cork should be LangerX.

Rory Gallagher is from Ballyshannon Co Doneygal and not Cork. :p

Nice tribute to 50 years of Cork Airport on Nationwide RTÉ 1 now.

Can't imagine there would be any public appetite for this. An airport that is already sadly operating a loss is going to gain absolutely nothing by changing its name. A total non-starter.

Whats wrong with calling Cork Airport, Cork Airport?

Its not as if there are any other airports in Cork to confuse things.

I think Gallaghar would be somewhat embarrassed at the idea of naming it after him.

I don't think re-naming places always works. I still refer to George Best as Belfast City but always call the other place Aldergrove as opposed to Belfast International.

And despite having 4 different names in its short 25 years I have never heard anyone refer to Connacht Reigonal, Horan International or Ireland West, as anything other than plain old Knock Airport.

Methinks its a lot of bollox and little more than a ' Trojan Horse ' to open minds to the idea of renaming it after '' The Greatest Ever Taoiseach - Jack Lynch ''

    "Micheal Collins Airport"?

If there's only one railway station in a town then it doesn't matter what the official name is, people will simply refer to it as 'the railway station', ditto the sole airport in a city, whether it's Dublin, Cork or Liverpool. Locals in Southampton refer to their airport as 'Eastleigh', the name of the village beside the airport.

I've heard people refer to Belfast ('George Best') City airport as 'the one beside IKEA'!
