Skoda Fabia Window motor

I have a 01 Skoda Fabia that's driver side window is refusing to go down, it just makes a clicking noise, the switch on the drivers side which operates the passenger side window works the other window fine so it's not that causing the trouble. After going to a garage to get it checked the mechanic suggested that the problem was the motor an it needs to be replaced and that the price would be €170 ex VAT.
Looking through Micks garage and Irish auto parts I only see regulators, not motors, Are they the same thing?

    This too shall pass.

Try unlocking the car using the Key and keep the key held in the Unlock position. This should roll both windows down. If the Drivers side stays up then it could well be the motor......

It's supposed to do that? I thought it was just a glitch. Anyway only the passenger side is going up and down.

Can you hear the motor whirring when you press the switch?
If you can then your window regulator is more than likely at fault.
The cable can fray and break.

If its the motor they are not cheap to replace, or at least they werent when I was looking for one on my golf. Nearly 250 Euro from the dealer. I eventually found one from a lad who was breaking another golf for 50 Euro

Edit: I see the mechanic quoted you a price for the motor. Micks Garage dont sell motors. A scrap yard or ebay is your best bet if your want to go for a cheaper alternative

I hear a once off click when I operate the switch, mechanic tried a different switch in the car with the same result.

    This too shall pass.

Your better off getting them to take it out and see if the regulator or motor is causing the problem. The clicking might be the motor trying to move the regulator but its jammed.

You could take it out yourself if your that way inclined. Its a typical problem so a google search should give you a guide on what to do.

The lads on www.briskoda.com or www.vagdrivers.net might be able to direct you a little better

To answer your question, regulator generally refers to the mechanism that holds the glass and allows its movement up and down while the motor actually spins to move this mechanism.

Best to get the garage to remove door card and find out if its motor or regulator.
