Volvo S40 2008

    Hi
I recently bought a 2008 Volvo S40 1.8 petrol. Mileage high as it was a company car but on the other hand serviced like clockwork and I used one of those deals for the oil change and service check and the garage said everything was good.

Recently I've noticed that about 2 minutes after I park the car and get out, it makes a noise. Almost like it's farting - not the best description I'm afraid but best I can do. It's just for 1-2 seconds. Apart from that everything is fine, it starts, there's no warning lights etc. Is it something to worry about?

They do sort of "lock" themselves again a short while after you've locked them. No idea why, but it should sound the same as when you lock it. If it's not that sort of noise, then I've no idea what it is.

Just to note, that becuase it's a 2008 it's probably a FlexiFuel model (should say 1.8FF on the back) and they are due for service every 10,000km rather than 20,000km for the normal petrol models.

As R.O.R said, it could be the car locking itself but rather engaging dead bolts if the car is equipped with them.

It could also be the sound of the exhaust cooling down.

If it is a kind of a quick screechy noise then this is the fuel tank cover locking itself a couple of seconds after the car is locked. Not sure why this feature is there, maybe so you can lock your car and still have a few seconds to fill up but that seems a tad unnecessary. Next time you lock your car stand beside the fuel cover and wait to see if the sound is coming from there.

edit: that is not an S40 I am thinking of that does this but could be standard on different models of Volvo

Quick screetchy noise is a good description of it. Yes it is a 1.8 FFV and was serviced every 10,000km, I got the mini service done shortly after buying it as it came with a short enough warrenty and I wanted to make sure the car was as good as it looked. I also had an independent mechanic look at it before purchasing (I'm not paranoid just cautious!) so I was fairly confident that it would be okay but the noise just seems so odd!

If that is the noise then I would be confident that it is the fuel tank cover locking itself shortly after the car is locked. As I said I wasn't relating it tot he S40 but maybe all models have this feature
