Any ideas why two Win 7 machines wirelessly connected to the same access point can't see each other ?

The network map just gives a big "?" for the Access Point.

There may be a firewall on one or both machines.

They may also be set to a public network.

    Look at:
    http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-networking/4416-how-change-network-type.html
to change the type to home.

eg. if playing an online game they might be trying to connect through the same port. one will have to force itself to the next port setting within the range.

They also need to be part of the same Homegroup. Type homegroup in the start menu

Setting up networking in windows 7 is a bit of a pain, they changed everything since XP which I found much more straight forward to network.

the settings your looking for are in control panel (or right click the network icon in the tray) > network and sharing centre > advanced sharing settings over on the left in network and sharing centre.

Is UPNP turned on on both machines and on your access point?

As far as I remember UPNP is needed for the 'homegroup' feature to work correctly.

Fair play Achilles, UPnP was off.

I turned it on and now one PC can see the other, and they can all see the Access Point now on the Network Map.

I can remote desktop, view shares etc

Best of all the printer on Computer A is showing up on Computer B so that's mission accomplished !!

Glad to hear it mate, you'll have a decent home network up and running in no time with shared hard drives, multimedia servers and the likes.

    :-)
