Person with high beams on behind you

As it comes into the dark mornings/evenings this is happening more and more often. I'm sure I don't have to explain how distracting this is.

So is there some sort of etiquette that I'm unaware of, of how you bring attention to the person behind you that they're being and dope and leaving their beams on? Or do I just have to put up with it? I've gone for miles on back roads with some idiot behind me with beams on and people coming towards us flashing, but still, they leave them on!

So what to do? Warn or ignore?

Turn on rear fog lights and flip the rear view mirror so that it isn't near as distracting.

Hopefully he'll start to get pissed off about the fog lights and might realise he/she has their full beams on.

Adjust you're mirrors and you won't even notice them.

I do adjust the mirror obviously but I shouldn't have to! Rear fog light is good idea though. I will be doing that in future!

Don't put on your rear fog light.

If it bothers you simply pull over, let said car pass and get on with your life.

    Auto dimming mirror ftw :)
One of the few extras that I actually think one really appreciates when you have it rather than miss it when you don't.

If i did the pull over thing it would make me very late for work as it's never just one person. Also if I'm doing nothing wrong why should I pull over? You must be one of these beams people

Oh dear. Why does it always come to this.

Intelligence out the window.... anyone who disagrees with me or who does not see my point of view must be one of those people. Deary me.

it sometimes happen me when im behind a car and i can see the driver in front adjusting their mirror
it is just because i have clear cleaned lights(standard fitted)
possibly this is the cause sometimes

Deary me indeed! Hardly intelligent to pull in for everything on the road that annoys you. Oh and the fact that it's not safe all the time either...yup, that's it. Deary, deary me :D Cheer up, it was a lovely day, work tomorrow, life couldn't get any better!

you can usually tell the difference with those I find. It's so frustrating because if someone isn't paying attention enough while they're driving to know they have their beams on, what else aren't they paying attention to? I don't want someone like that near me on the road!

Is that a problem even when the beams are correctly adjusted.

The only time I get bothered (without full beams on) is when jeeps or vans come up behind me and the lights are obviously placed higher up on the car. Nothing you can do about that.

    spot on
    it is a van alright
on back roads with no street lights when i come up behind slower moving traffic it tends to light up the inside of the car in front
perhaps this is the ops problem

Be it Full beams/Foglights, there both as distracting as each other I flick the r/v mirror and it depends really, use the rear foglight.

My car has one foglight but can have two it just needs a wire running to the other lamp unit, I've been seriously tempted to wire it up for cases such as this ! Truth be told, it's rarely used unless they're delibrately being a c**t.

I believe if Your behind me with your foglights on then it's only fair I use mine too :D

Stop the car at the next available opportunity, get out and flake the head off him. Maybe next time he wont be so keen to forget

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,504 ✭✭✭barura

Flip the rear view mirror. Life is too short to let stuff like that get you down. When you get to a red light, get out of your car and tell them.

It bugs me, doesn't get me down. I won't be getting out though...he could be a nutter! Or an old lady, and I'd feel bad then

What bugs me is that a driver could potentially do this for years and years and get away with it, considering the way our roads are policed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,504 ✭✭✭barura

I'm not suggesting violence, but I keep a huge monkey wrench in my drivers side door well. Just... In case.

also, for putting bikes into my weee polo. :D

People who do this really piss me off! I'd love to put my rear fogs on but that's only being just as stupid as the person behind me! I just adjust my mirror and curse them!!! Stupid cnuts!!!!

Never realised just how handy these are until I got this car.. Excellent stuff.
But when it does happen I usually let them pass me and happily return the favour when I am behind them for the next few miles :D

it drive me soft when people have fog lights on behind. i usually blast them with my rear fog light. People do tend to get overly agressive by flashing there full beams back. You'd figure someone who can flash there beams so willnly would be able to figure our there fogs are on.......

another thing i like to do it hit the breaks on tail gators, it scarres the **** out of them

All great fun until you are on your own in the car being tialgated by a car with 3 or 4 in it and the bang into the back of you..Try explaining why you suddenly braked to the law

whats the acceptable distance for putting the high beams back on when there is a car far in the distance in front?

The low beams don't cover enough ground so its uncomfortable to drive on them and say the car is 500-600meters in front for example.

There is no acceptable distance for it. If you can see them, they can see you. Light travels in straight lines, so if there's a car in front, do NOT put on your main beams.

If you reckon that is the case you need to either slow down or go to specsavers or some other optician for an eyetest really.

i dont mean breaking hard, just enought to make the brake lighs blip on for a couple of secs, if i had to break suddenly for a dog or fox & they were not maintaining a safe distane & driving with due attention well then thats there problem.............

Meh in that case the main beam stays on for me, I like to see. Dips are poor enough on my car, very sharp cut off on them. Fellow in front can dip his mirror. I've to do it enough anyways.

If I'm <200m behind I'll dip the lights though.

Or you could get your lights sorted out and get your eyes checked. Theres no reason to inconvenience every other motorist on the road (both in front and oncoming)

Well eyes are fine, 6/6 vision here.

Its then inherent design of my headlights, very little spill off on dipped beams. And yes you have to slow down with them. Bit of a pain.

Of course I'll dip the lights for oncoming traffic, common courtesy.

But in specific situations I outlined above, I'll pop the main beam back on. If you don't like it. dip your rear view mirror. Simple as.

Or, get your lights seen to. Seriously, you're talking about common courtesy in one line, then inconveniencing other motorists the next...

You won't be long annoying people, that's for sure

Nothing wrong with the headlights. Perfect aim and legal in every aspect. Its a manufacture design fault that was rectified in a later face lift of the model when they redesigned the headlights.

I getting tired of saying this, adjust the mirror if you don't like it as there is a little button on it for when this happens

Anyways, I'm going to leave it there as its going to drag the thread off course.

Make up your mind, you've had two posts already complaining about your lights, now you're saying there's nothing wrong with them. If you can't see properly with them, there's an issue. Find some way to fix it, even for your own sake. Get HIDs fitted if that's whats needed.

There's more than one mirror on a car, two of which can't be dimmed.

Flip on the rear fog light for idiots that can't dip. only answer to there stupidity. Sometimes pulling in and letting them pass and then give them full beams works a treat. Let them flip there mirror.

True that! It's coming into use all too often for my liking and the feature is probably taken for granted, but damn I'd miss it if it was taken away from me now.

Agree with the other poster about there's two mirrors that can't be dimmed. If you have your beams on behind someone and they want to overtake someone in front they can't do so safely as looking over their shoulder will leave them dazzled from your lights, and they also can't use their wing mirrors correctly if your beams are shining on them.

I've always thought it was if you can see the tail lights of the car in front, then you put your dips on.

Also is there a way to tell people in front of you that have their rear fog light on to turn it off, happened to be behind one this evening and flashed them, flashed with my fog lights and nothing, thankfully they turned off but I suppose if they dont see me flashing them, I doubt they realise that their rear fog light is on!

There's no readily recognised signal. If you're getting glare just overtake, or hang back until they're no longer a problem or let someone else pass you out and take the brunt.

When I was learning to drive the Rules of the road specifically said NEVER brake for a dog or like if you are likely to cause an accident with following traffic.. ;)

As I said.. Be careful what you are doing.

These guys are a bit like the poor, (now includes me) They'll always be with us.

I always noticed that the Fog lamp offenders tended to be a primarily Dublin issue, with new cars the most prevalent.

I long for the day that the GS can tackle the tits in Mk4 Golfs, Civics etc with HD lamps that blind oncoming traffic.

    W*nkers the lot of you.

TBH having misaligned headlights should be a penalty points offense.

And light diminshes over distance, e.g it's not a blazing inferno on earth.
If someone is 600 + metres it's probably ok, especially on a back road as most of the time your lights won't even be pointed straight at them.
for a dual carraigeway etc of course use your judgement and don't dazzle drivers in the opposite lanes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Stupid people with HID lights in old style reflector headlamps. Just because the idiot in the fiesta thinks there cool doesn't make it so. :o

So, it's pitch dark on a coutry road and my eyes are adjusted accordingly while I drive.

You think it's okay to have your headlights on full beam while you're in my line of sight?

    It is not!

Have some common courtesy and do the right thing.
