so i updated ti iOS5 the other day.

one of the first thinks i noticed was the colour change of the send button and bubbles in SMS.
But tonight i got a messege from a mate that i know has an iPhone 4 and the send button/bubbles were blue, then i noticed that when i got a messege on the home screen it came up with his name and iMessege under it.

Does the phones automatically pick up when two iOS5 devices are talking to each other and automatically enable iMessege between them?

I don't know anyone else running iOS5. Does the iPhone let you know if the other user has an iPhone with iOS5.

Ha ha I'm such an idiot. Never thought of that. The change is very subtle.

Is her caller ID setting her phone number or her email address?

When I go into Settings->Messages iMessage is turned on but under it says "Waiting for activation". I have jailbroken and unlocked my 3Gs and I presume iMessage won't work due to this. Has anyone else experienced this problem or has a fix been released yet?

On her phone settings>messages>receive at>caller ID

I don't know if this'll help, just came across it earlier. Hope it helps.

It's still an iMessage. You just don't have her email address stored against her contract entry, I'll wager.

Yeah it does if your in doubt take out your SIM card and connect to your wifi you should still be able to send/receive messages to other iOS 5 users

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

    Peeps.

If you have difficulty sending to a person whom you know to have activated iMessage (remaining in green rather than turning to blue), as strange as it may seem I have found that rebooting your own device (rather than them rebooting theirs as one might reasonably expect), clears the problem.

I base my conclusions on having done this over 10 times with 100% success each time.

The phone is originally locked to o2 Uk. I'm using it with Vodafone Ireland. I haven't actually tried to send an iMessage yet, must give it a try.

It's free! Plus there's delivery reports and I think you can see when someone's typing a response. Also it's not restricted to phone numbers, email addresses work as well, AFAIK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,900 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

My text messages are already free. I'll give it a proper run when I get a few more contacts on iOS5, hopefully its not jsut wasted data and the little quirks are worth it.
I suppose its handy for sending pics for free (I pay for MMS)

Will a message only send and be received as an iMessage whenever both parties (with iOS5 installed on both of their devices) have access to a data/Wi-Fi connection?

I ask because I send lots of messages to my sister in Australia. She has an iPhone with iOS5 installed, and I want to be able to send pictures etc. via iMessage without being charged through the nose for an international MMS message.

    Thanks

No. This is the beauty of it. It works on 3G too. You may send text, photos, video and so on. This comes out of your data bundle. To all intents and purposes it is free.

Ok. So, if I send a message to my sister (in Oz) and she has no data coverage / WiFi, will it send as a normal txt message or will it just deliver over iMessage when she has a data connection again?

No, wifi/data doesn't enter into it. It will deliver over 3G. There is no requisite to have wifi enabled. She has iOS 5, ergo she has an iOS device and therefore she has data From her mobile provider on her phone. It doesn't matter if she's using that data or data from home wifi or other. It will be delivered as long as she is in coverage on 3G or data and it will be delivered when she returns to coverage if she has been in a blind spot.

Furthermore, to prevent your text or picture EVER being delivered as an expensive SMS/MMS go now to settings/messages and turn "send as SMS" to the off position. Leave it like that for the rest of time.

Yes, simples. You just pretend to send one, wait a few seconds and watch as your contact turns blue from green. In other words, the send button will turn blue and the text in the text box will change from message to iMessage.

After you send one, you will notice that each iMessage contact has a blue iChat speech bubble against their number, email address or both.

Sorry, I think I read you too hastily, however my responses are still valid. It will eventually be delivered and to prevent cost, turn send as SMS off.

Yes, Whatsapp too. I think the point is, you just continue as before (most people have SMS bundles) and as people update you get the bonus of iMessage. Perhaps it will autodetect in future versions of the OS.

You're presuming he/she has an unlimited date bundle.

If MMS are part of you current package, they do not count against your data bundle.

With iMessage they would (in 3g areas)

I know its not an issue for everyone but I still wouldn't mind the option of deciding whether I want to send something as an SMS, MMS or iMessage

I'm not presuming that at all, I'm presuming however that anyone with a limited data bundle will be mindful of it.

Even if MMS was part of your current package it would never be included as an international MMS -and often is either not delivered or alerted as an irritating URL.

You do at all times have the option to send as an SMS, LMS, MMS or iMessage but if you wish to avoid the surprise of your free iMessage turning into an expensive text, for reasons beyond your control, then the turning off of "Send as SMS" is a sensible idea, especially if you are frequently sending abroad.

Found a bitesms beta that integrates iMessage well. Add this repo http://test-cydia.bitesms.com/.

em, how can I choose these options?

You don't have to. You don't do anything. You simply leave as it ever was and the Messages app will send your message automatically as an SMS, LMS, MMS or iMessage.

But you can choose to make certain that iMessage is never sent as an SMS/LMS/MMS to a foreign destination, thus avoiding hefty charges, by turning off "send as SMS" in settings/messages.

This in no way impairs your ability to send any other kind of message to those who don't have iMessage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,042 ✭✭✭kaizersoze

It's fairly straight forward lads. If the 'Send' button is blue it'll go as an iMessage. If the button is green it goes as a standard SMS/MMS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,328 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Thats now why I was asking.

If I want to send an MMS (or SMS) to to an Irish iphone using IOS5, can I choose to do that instead of using imessage, without turning off data?

Of course. You don't turn off data, though, you do however turn off iMessage because if the other party has iMessage your MMS, for example, would go as a free iMessage. To do this you go to settings/messages.

This begs the question though: why_would_you_want_to_do_this when the whole thing is automatic?

Because iMessages use data allowance, and MMS doesn't.

I've come perillously close to my limits a couple of months and I know others with even smaller data allowance.

Time to move network, then :-)

It's easy to turn off and on.

I normally use viber or whatsapp but decided to try iMessage.
Is this just a flaw in IOS5.
I assume I won't be charged for international texts :)
