The game i have chosen as game of the week is maniac mansion on the nes. Id been thinking for a while about what game to choose. I really wanted to pick a zelda game, goldeneye, final fantasy or the like but appreciate that most of you guys here want to stay away from the mainstream games.
So i have picked maniac mansion because its a game i loved as a child. It was the original survival horror game(although it was a lot more childish than resi evil etc). I havent played the game through in years but when i was younger i recall it being a lenghty game. For those of you who have never played it i hope this gives you the incentive to give it a try. Its a truely enjoyable game.

I alwaya felt the original survival horror game, the one Resi copied left right and centre, was Alone In The Dark, I had it many moons ago and it had all the constituents of the later game, prerendered backgrounds, polygonal animated characters, scary things, more a Lovecraft pastiche than Resi's take on the Romero zombie myth though

What a great choice for Game Of The Week! I love the old adventure titles like this one. My favourite is the Police Quest series although I also enjoyed Day Of The Tentacle and The Secret Of Monkey Island.

Maniac Mansion however is one of the true innovators. A cornerstone in gaming. :)

Wasn't Project Firestart the original survival horror. I also think it's no secret that Resi copied Alone in the Dark, all the press at the time had picked up on that.

I tried to like Maniac Mansion but it was a tough game to get into. My problem with ti was that it had 'Sierra syndrome' were you could screw the game up and not know about it. Thought the later Lucas games were better because they got rid of this.

The NES version is also one of the worst versions of the game because of all the cuts and censorship. For this game C64 and PC are the way to go.

Yeah. Sierra games were made that if you missed objects you could end up in an unwinnable situation and need to start over. Later Lucas Arts games got rid of this.
