Engine overheating

My car was parked up for 6 weeks on a steep hill (not sure if that's relevant) and now after driving for less than 5 minutes the engine temperature gauge shoots up to the top and a flashing red STOP appears under the speedometer

It was fine before I parked it up. When I tried to start it up first it took a few attempts but I think that's normal. It stated fine after that

It's a 2001 Peugeot 206 diesel. I'm thinking (hoping) it just needs coolant for the radiator. Does that sound right or does anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong?

    Thanks

Have you checked the coolant level yet?

Have you checked the coolant level yet?

I did just after I posted the thread (and watched a video explaining how to do it :p) and it looked to me to be completely empty. But having never checked it before I'm not sure I did it right. I'm on my way in to buy some coolant now which will hopefully solve the problem

It doesn't sound right to me that the coolant could completely disappear after 6 weeks of non-use though. I only got it serviced recently.....

I have a coolant leak. I filled it up and drove for a few minutes until it overheated again and I saw the coolant pissing out of the tube. Hopefully that's the only thing that's wrong

It is important once the leak is fixed that the cooling system is completely bled of air or you will get overheating again.

If you've driven it a couple of times now with no coolant and overheating you'd want to have the the condition of the head gasket tested.

Thanks I'll say both of those to the mechanic
