Can you view wepages on your phone when not using hotspot? as in making sure the 3g/web connection is fully working before tethering starts.

Yeh,pages are loading a bit slow but.

Edit-Noticed this morning when I go Portable Wifi Settings,it says Error underneath were you tick the box for Portable Wifi Hotspot.Anyone got any advice??

Tried it again and when I disconnect wifi, the little blue icon stays in the status bar at the top.I can make/receive calls no problem this morning though webpages are loading up slower than usual on the phone.I've a bad feeling I may have a dodgy handset?

Have you tried turning it off and on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭god's toy

just for the sake of it, have you turned on your WiFi hotspot and connected a device without a password?

next thing to think of (for me anyway) is a full reset of your phone.

Yep, tried it without password, no joy.
How do I do full reset? Will I lose all apps, notes etc that I've downloaded/created?

Had similar problem a few weeks back, resolved by changing modems security from wep to wpa. Think S2 has issues with wep protocol

if your going to reset, In settings click 'Privacy' and you will see Factory data reset hit that and away you go.

You will lose downloaded apps (paid apps can be downloaded without charge once more) and all your settings will be reset. Stuff like music and photos will be fine.

does it matter what app to use for tethering,Im on cyanoid7 and use the one built into that.Is there any better ones on the app store?

Cyanogen 7 is new for galaxy2, it's still buggy. Try a stable rom. Tethering works fine for me on litening rom.

Before you try wiping your phone I think Cyanogenmod does have a problem tethering, does ofr me on SGS 1.
    Try Barnacle from the market.
You need root but with Cyanogenmod you'll have that.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is Cyanogenmod??I only have phone over 2 weeks so I'm not used to all the lingo.I presumed that I could just use portable wifi on laptop without having to download anything or root the phone? The frustrating thing is that laptop says I'm connected, excellent signal strength but pages wont load.So I was hoping it was a simple thing that could be fixed quickly.

How do you normally connect to internet on this laptop?
What browser are you using to try to view web pages?
Are programs that do use the internet on your laptop, other than a web browser able to access the internet?

If both lapptop and phone show that you are connected, it may be an issue with settings on the laptop itself or within the browser!

Make sure things like Windows Update (if you use Windows) aren't using your bandwidth while connected.

I have a meteor prepaid dongle that I normally use on the laptop,it works fine.
I'm using Firefox and able to access net no problem.
If it is the laptop settings or browser settings, what do I do to fix it?I'm not great with computers!

For the time being just disable windows updates.
Can't remember off hand how to run them off from here.
    Not near an XP machine.

This might not be your problem however.
Can another phone connect to your wifi hotspot ?

OK,good news, just tried girlfriends laptop and wireless through S2 is working(thankfully its not the phone).Pages were loading very slow but have quickened up.So,would anyone know what might be blocking pages from loading on my laptop?Or should I put up a new post in computer forum?

You might get a more accurate answer over on the computer forum, but i'll hazard a guess anyway!

I'm gonna guess that your girlfriends computer uses a newer operating system than windows xp!
Following on from that it's likely that your computer only has one network set up under xp which uses the dongle to route all net access.

After you pair your phone to your laptop, you need to go to the start button, then to network, then to new network and follow the on screen prompts to set up the wi-fi as an active network on your pc.

You should be able to access the net through your wi-fi hotspot then.

Give it a try anyway and let us know how it goes!! :D

Still no joy! I turn on wifi, says connected but pages won't load.Even the meteor dongle page thingy says wifi connected. There seems to be a few connections listed but I couldn't find the new network you mention, it's not listed on start up.Wrecking my head now but as I said I'm not great with computers so maybe it's something to do with browser, I tried IE but nothing still.
Thanks for your help so far, at least I knitter it's not the phone, it's prob just something simple but I can't see it!

Another thing I thought it might be is the software for the dongle is interfering with the wifi connection you are trying to set up! Uninstalling it might get the wifi connection working!

This would not be practical though as you would need to uninstall and reinstall anytime you wanted to switch connections :D

Tried that marc, still no joy. It's strange that it shows it's connected, signal strength excellent,54 mbps, activity is good, packets being sent/received (wotever that means!) but it just won't load web pages! Man, I'm fit to scream!!

Did you try and see if you have any luck loading web pages with internet explorer or any other browser??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

Yeh,I tried using internet explorer,no joy.

A common cause of what you describe is where the ip address of the network adapter has been manually set. It would be unusual for this for a wifi adapter.

Try a command line tracert to a known site
    e.g. tracert www.boards.ie
If that doesn't work then try by ip: tracert 89.234.66.107

    Also try usb tethering.

Thanks jimmy,USB tethering doesn't work either.
How exactly do I try a command line tracert??Or try by ip?This is all double dutch to me
