Online Bullying?

    Has this ever affected you?

I know alot of people here maybe older so the teenage bullying thing that happens now might not have effected them.

But I ask this because I was reading through some threads and many people on Boards.ie were closing their accounts because of bullying.

I found it hard to believe but then I started noticing certain people always quoting certain posts and having a go at the person -

I also know somebody on boards who would tell me they 'hate such and such they're such thank whores' - I thought it was kinda sad to hold a grudge like this

So without naming names have you been effected by internet bullying or were you the person holding the grudge and why?

Nope! Probably a few people on here I dislike but isn't that the same in the 'real world'. You are not gonna get on with everyone so you just tend to ignore the posts of those you don't like! I won't like everybody, everybody won't like me, no biggy!

If someone is getting bullied online, then why don't they just close their browser

It's not like the bully is standing in front of them throwing verbal or physical abuse at them

All the replies so far is why there is bullying. Everyone wants to be part of the in crowd.
It happens a lot but the best thing is rise above it, it's not nice but it is the internet.

    Remember the formspring thing?

Anyway a while back there was a thread on mental health in AH, very popular. Anyway for a variety of reasons I was going through a very difficult time and I posted about my own struggles, in order to encourage others to do so. It was a great thread and everyone was very supportive, AH and boards at its very very best. Some arsehole who didn't like my politics decided to use details that I posted up, and write nasty things on my formspring account encouraging me to do myself in. Takes a lot to shock me, but I was pretty shocked, I would never say anything like what that person did to anyone no matter how much I hated them.

Now it upset me a bit but generally I just laugh stuff like that off, how sad and pathetic a person do you have to be to do something like that? But I can easily see how something like that could seriously effect someone with less thick skin than myself.
If you managing to get bullied online then you are a seriously special case.

Thats pure rubbish, online bullying happens. It could be something like I described or people setting up facebook profiles about people etc.

I was a bit upset about it but I talked it over with a few sound people and I just decided to get rid of the formspring thing.

Kinda feel sorry for someone who would do something like that tbh.

    Totally incorrect.

Bullying online is rife and even worse than it could ever be off it, if not for the simple fact that bullying is generally the domain of cowards and nowhere does the coward have as much protection as they do online.

On boards alone, Its shocking to see some of the stuff people post to others. The 'close the browser' argument is pure crap. You shouldnt have to stop doing something you enjoy caus of one tits grudge.

The internet can bring out the worst in people. They think they are hiding behind anonymity until/ if their actions warrant it they are outed and prosecuted. I'm sorry this was your experience but these people are certainly the minority.

I'm new enough around here and have to say when I saw that FS thing in some of your sigs I was just like WTF? It looks to me like a convenient way to troll/slate people without putting your boards account at risk. Anyone fill me in on the good points of it? What happened to Wolfe tone is sick, even more so considering the nature of the info, but not really surprising given the nature of the internet and some the courage (I use that loosely) some people seem to muster when sitting anonymously behind their keyboard.

I was introduced to a particular AH regular a while back at a beers. As soon as a I learned his username I launched into a bit of a rant. Said I wasn't a big fan of his and he came across as though he thought very little of women in general. He was appalled at my attack. Turns out I'd mistaken him for someone else...

Moral of the story I guess is that if you have a problem with someone on boards, keep it on boards.

As for that formspring phase I'm glad it seems to have passed. A little anonymity sometimes isn't a good thing. People think it's funny to abuse or troll someone from behind the safety of their monitors, but the fact is you don't know what way it will be received. I've seen some seriously nasty things said on formspring and many friends have had to close their accounts as a result.

They 'may' be thanking posts to let the other mods know that they are dealing with the post, so as not to have the other mods taking up the case. I'm fairly sure thats the reason they thank them.

    Edit: Or maybe not.

Maybe people are just ultra sensitive nowadays OP. If the opinions of anonymous people on an internet message board gets to you, then you've lived a very sheltered life.

You asked him if he was trying to bully you. You are implying by saying that, that he is.

There is nothing wrong with saying what you think, just dont expect everyone to agree with you and not pull you up on it. ;)

I think that it's more common than you let on. It's rampant on FB, especially among young girls. It can be literally soul and life destroying for some. It depends on the personality of the victim really.

There was that girl in the states who killed herself over it, I think?

The more people go online the more real it seems to them. The emotions are real even if if they never meet the person who is cruel to them.
