Any ladies looking for a new sport...?

Just a quick note to say that Malahide Ladies Rugby Team are looking for new members. They currently train on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.30pm-9pm in Malahide Rugby Club.

Training varies alot, usually a few running drills, passing drills, ball work, some games...and a bit of tackling, but only for those interested. The main aim is to get more ladies involved with the club..so even if you have no interest in playing rugby or getting into the contact side of it you are more than welcome to pop along to training sessions.

I only joined the club a few weeks ago and I'm completely loving it...(I've yet to figure out the rules.....but it'll happen...in time). They are catering for complete beginners...(even utterly useless ones like myself who have never played any sport!). Don't be worried if you think your not fit enough or don't know the rules of the sport..all that will come in good time. Currently there are more new girls then there are experienced..so no need to feel intimidated at all :)

So if your looking for something to do to get in shape for the run up to Christmas pop along and have a look!

Note: I have nothing to do with the team/club nor do I actually know anything about rugby but I'm still loving the training :)..just thought I'd pop it up for anyone living near the area that might be interested. If anyone wants to PM me about it feel free :)

Hope to see a few new ladies down next week :)

Might be more suited to the Dublin or Rugby forum...

Chances are it's going to be people interested in rugby on the rugby forum.... I'm guessing she knew exactly what she was doing posting it here in fairness!

Would be curious I have to say (if I lived closer), but given I can't kick a round ball in a straight line, I've next or near no chance with a rugby ball :)

over half the players on a rugby team never kick the ball

Can't join you gymfreak, but just wanted to chime in if any ladies out there are feeling trepidation about doing something like this. I took up another sport (although some may not call diving a sport:rolleyes:) that came to me out of left field.

Anytime I've mentioned it to anyone, I get a  (mainly because not too many people have really heard of oly lifting... that I know anyway), I have not been able to do it consistently, I'm no spring chicken, and I have a few niggly body part issues. I felt all the nervousness, self doubt, etc (I still feel those too) and excuses but still gave it a go.

BUT its given me a whole other appreciation of my body, and I learn something new about myself each time. What more could I ask for:D

Where do you live? I know most ladies teams are recruiting.
My other half took it up last year and her only regret is not doing it sooner.

Dublin 14? I'd absolutely love the idea of the training drills, running etc (have played tag years ago) - but I think realistically I'd shy away from tackling and end up handing the ball to an opponent to avoid getting hurt :)

Gymfreak, how to you have the *time* to do this with all your other training!! :O

Tackling isn't really all that bad.
The huge hits you see in the videos don't happen very often. Most tackling is just sort of catching people. You'll even learn how to fall properly.
Don't let it put you off.

You'd be surprised you might like hitting people!

There are a few southside Womens teams that might suit, they are generally always looking for new players:
Tallaght, Old Belvo and UCD play in Div 4 (dev league)
Clondalking in play in Div 3
and Blackrock, Old Belvo and St Marys play in the All ireland League.

Tackling is easy, once you're taught how. When I started playing rugby, we spent two or three sessions just learning how to fall. Injuries happen when you don't commit to a tackle, but if you go in full speed and full whack, you'll be fine. Besides, 9 times out of 10 you'll land on the player you're tackling :)

Oh believe me..I don't even know the rules yet, I just do what I'm told to do. And I've actually found that passing and receiving a rugby ball is quite easy cos of the shape.

I have no idea..but it's come in good timing, giving the conditioning a miss in the run up to a competition so rugby fits nicely into the plan...once I stay injury free :)

With regards to tackling...I'm probably one of the most squeamish people you'll meet. I shriek andsqueal when people run at me never mind when if I'm gonna get tackled or do the tackling!! The way Malahide Club have set it up is that the introduction to tackling has been sequential and non-intimidating. eg. tackling bags, or partner drills were one partner is already kneeling etc..because they're slowing weaning us in it isn't intimidating.

Now...if I could just get over my fear of falling :D

I'm in Dublin 6, wouldn't mind trying rugby out with a dev team (I'm a complete beginner). didn't see anything on division 4 teams in the link there. is anyone on here involved in any of the div 4 teams?

If you check out the link Thud posted, you can contact Old Belvedere there. The first, second, third and fourth teams often train together, and even if they don't, the contact for Old Belvo 1st will know who to put you in touch with.

As for Tallaght you can contact Mairead Hayden at 086 2321936

Hey CW I started playing with UCD this year. So we are in the 4th division. I wanted to give it a go after playing tag all summer. Its is amazing fun I have to say!

I really hate falling, probably from years of riding horses! But you get over it when you have no choice! lol
As for tackling other players it just comes to you. Even if you cant get your arms around them at least you can swing them around by the jersey and stop them breaking the line.
There is also a great team spirit in rugby as you all protect and help each other out.
We played Old Belvo 3 weeks ago and the girls were all very nice, there was no dirty playing or anything, so it might be worth heading down to them for some training if your interested. Or if you are in UCD or graduated last year you can come and play with us!

    !
Phew...so there's hope for me yet! :) I squeal, shriek and screech all at once when it comes to tackling :D:D

Also..anyone living near Malahide...training is on at 7.30pm tonight :) If anyone wants to PM me with queries...fire away!
