Is it when the engine is coming to a stop or the car?

Brake pads are something that come to mind if its the car coming to a stop.

It's not the gearbox whining is it?

Yep, reckon its the brake pads alright. The wearing part of the pad is worn away and the metal backing is just beginning to contact the steel of the brake disc.

Get the pads replaced immediately or you will have to replace the discs as well if they get scratched from the metal on metal contact.

Shouldn't cost the earth to get them replaced.

I was going by the OP's description of "whirling" when suggesting the brake pads as it would suggest something rotating rather more slowly than the parts in the gearbox. The chain would make more of a ticking noise, I would expect.

The chain on my Sunny was kinda rattley sometimes, but her Corsa's chain would make a "Whursh"ing noise. Close enough to "Whirling" :D
The gearbox on the sunny made more of nnnnAAAArrrr noise I suppose.

got the car checked out earlier..needs new break pads and discs apparently coz the as**ole i bought it from left the break discs get destroyed and just put on some new pads before i bought it. and also as the guy was driving it out of the garage he tells me that noise i was talking about is actually the gearbox!!ahhhh:mad:
