There were rumors about carl lewis at the time ,and the classy Thompson though it would be nice to have a pop. Anything to have his photo taken. Some say he was class, but just think its attention seeking.

Probably because he didn't like Lewis. Don't think many athletes did.

Don't know what the big deal is, I wouldn't carry the British flag into the Olympics either.

    This is class
In Lanzarote with the big guy. My great rival, Jurgen Hingsen of Germany, and I just happened to be training at the same place before the 1984 Olympics. We had our usual banter. Well, I spoke to him; he didn’t speak to me. The picture illustrates the physical differences between us. You can see how short I am (6ft) and how tall he is (6ft 8in). You can see how good-looking I am and how ugly he is.

Interesting he is mates with Seb Coe considering Seb described the decathlon as "9 mickey mouse events and a slow 1500m".

Must have just been Seb having the craic.

Seb Coe would never say anything like that! It was Ovett who came out with that idiotic comment.

    Anyone recall Thompson's reply? :D

    What was his reply?

For some reason I always thought it was Seb who said that. Don't know why.

Overtt is gas. I remeber Eamonn Coghlan talking about him on "Play it again Des" a few years back. Ovett had never ran an indoor race before and was describing the tight turns to be like running around a bathtub or some rubbish like that. When he and Eamonn were standing beside each other on the start line, Ovett turned to Eamonn and asked him how should he run this race (asshe hadn't a clue about indoor running) and Coghlan said some sly remark about his bathtub comment. Can't remember the exact quotes.

    Some tulip Ovett is!

If he ever repeats that I'll smash his teeth in!

    Or words to that effect.

I'm 35, just looking at him now it's easy to see how an 8 year old (84) could be a fan of daley thompson, as mrs doyle would say "daley thompson has a happy face"...
then of course even before i knew who Iron Maiden was, there was the famous Lucozade ad....where i would run to the tv "look ma it's daley thompson..."

The Phantom of the Opera.........whopper tune.
After reading that article I think I have even more respect for Daley Thompson. If only Cragg had Daley as his coach, then we'd get to see what he's really capable of.
