Is the election overshadowing the referenda?

I think it is completely overshadowing it. The public are completely engrossed in a bid for a mickey mouse position when two highly important votes on the publics future relationship with it's government are being sidetracked.

Yes, the referendum campaign (or whatever it's called) was formally launched this week, but I worry that people will turn up to the vote only thinking of their candidate, and then blindly vote on the referenda (perhaps this is what they do, in any case...)

Has the media been sidelining the referenda?

    Discuss.

I think it is being overshadowed. The radio ads only started this week on the 2 referenda, and there is next to no discussion on it.
The one big decision I see is the change to give new powers to parliamentary committees to conduct investigations, is to take place on the same day, something from abbeylara, but its difficult to find information without looking for it.
There is a committee who are meant to be informing the public on these 2 decisions...seems like they are not doing their job very well. I fear like you a lot will just vote yes, as they will not be informed on it!!

And as I write this, there are a thousand threads about whether McG is a terrorist, Norris is a disability cheat, Dana is a loola... all clearly more important than deciding whether to give the government more power over our lives.

I've been actively watching the news about the big presidential election for the past month and never heard anything about referendums until two days ago. I'l have to do some reading up on it and I find their information campaign is coming a bit late with only two weeks to go.

4° It shall be for the House or Houses concerned to determine the appropriate balance between the rights of persons and the public interest for the purposes of ensuring an effective inquiry into any matter to which subsection 2º applies.
the proposed subsection 4 appears not only entirely gratuitous and unnecessary, but also potentially dangerous.

    Welcome to the police state.

I agree. Any time I raise the dangers of this people respond by pointing out that some crimes cannot easily be contested in court. Ok, so if something is wrong with the court system, reform it. Don't create a second court system.

I'm afraid that given the populist reasoning behind both amendments (lower judges pay, bring the bankers to trial), and coupled with the complete lack of coverage by the media, these amendments are going to pass.
