Who does Miriam O Callaghan think she is?

What unsurprising pathetic showing once more from Miriam tonight on the debate, spending her time viciously abusing Martin McGuinness not allowing him to speak, and cutting across the others once more and attacking Sean Gallagher and David Norris also to a lesser degree.

Obviously either under orders to do so or going on her on elitist opinions. She has some cheek abusing Sean Gallagher for his FF involvement considering her familys strong links with the party and her brother a FF councillor.

Another potential relevant debate ruined by arrogant presenters. About time the likes of Miriam, Duffy, Finucane, Kenny and Tubridy and the establishment Dublin elites packed their bags and gave up their disgusting undesereved tax funded salaries.

She must think its the 1980s again and Martin McGuinness isnt allowed to speak on television at all. Even if you hate McGuinness the man at least deserves a chance to speak.

Get rid of the TV license and get rid of these embarrassments from national television.

What a load of crap. These people refused to answer questions truthfully. Worried that they may annoy the people that are paying for their campaigns.

On one hand you have an idiot like tubridy who these people love because the hardest question he'll ask is who did your hair. And then we have Miriam, not afraid to ask the questions that need to be asked. And people like you don't like that.

McGuinness is a dirty liar and deserves to be shown for just that.

Would you like a cup of denial with your dellusion cake?

I used to like Miriam but not after tonight's performance, might as well be watching state controlled media in Iran for the way she preformed.

Thanks, is there anywhere that shows the whole debate. That link gives the debate up to the first break and then repeats from the start.

Ah poor Martin, was in the IRA for years, admitted to shooting a gun (but he must have been crap as he said he never killed anyone), but he, his party, and supporters have a melt down over tough questions on the t.v. by a woman. It's pathetically funny.

She has become very politically/socially (and emotionally)vocal in recent years and no doubt was bouyed up by the talk of her running for the office that she chaired the election debate for. Also, she championed John Hume in that RTE 'Irelands Greatest' programme with indifferance to MMG and Sinn Fein which would explain her disdain towards him.

IMO she has lost any impartiality and should no longer be allowed to host debates like this.

Are you for real or tongue in cheek ?

Why didn't he pick a spot on the wall, remain calm and refuse to recognise the interviewer like he was trained to do ?

Yes, for real. You are suggesting that after all the things MMG etc have done through out the years that it was tough questions by a (mere) woman that caused them to melt down. I dont see the relevance of her gender unless you were trying to imply what I put in brackets above. Sexist is the only word for it.

Im not offended in the slightest I just pointed out that what you said is sexist which it is. What words are there for me?

Can't say, bans are handed out like election leaflets on boards.ie, no matter how mild the word is. Ridiculously P.C. is a start though.

You're not going to be banned for being sexist.
And yes, you are sexist. Saying "by a woman" is sexist, whether you like it or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Lads, there's something wrong with you guys if you think saying "by a woman" is sexist. I'll remember this though, it's the first time in 35 years on this earth I've ever been called sexist so the issue is not with me.

If I was to change it to "by a man" would that also be sexist ? Or are you just trying to imply that I'm implying something be mentioning the sex ? My whole post was dripping with sarcasm, don't know why that bit would be singled out as being the serious part.

Good, I'm sick and tired off watching these biased gob****es tell us what to think.

Either remove the license fee or remove the 6 names and their tens of millions of salary from our taxes, because they are certainly not there for being good at their job.

I think any country that abolished the TV license ended up just giving grants to the broadcastors instead. I don't know if that would be much better. At least you have the option of not having a tv if you dont want one - but id say there are only a few people who go down that route.

Both the Prime Time and Vincent Browne debates spent more time on M.McG's past than on what these candidates could do for our future. I was disappointed in Miriam. Thought she was above the dirt digging and would focus on the real issues, which as MAry Davis said, they didn't get time to cover at all

    TBH.

I think she was just trying to out "vinnyb" vinny b.

and failed miserably by making a complete cock of things.

what was worse was she'd ask somenone a question and then within 3 words would jump in talking over whichever candidate was involved.

maybe she felt like she had to step up to crowleys level in the first round of debates but whatever she was trying to do she came out with the worst debate so far.

Wouldn't touch her with a barge pole, her fake accent does me head in.

As for the "show" last night for her to go around and ask every other candidate bar MMG if they would vote for MMG was nothing short of embarrasing and disgracefully one-sided, RTE need to move on and look forward, the IRA/MMG is boring and done-to-death now.

And for the record MMG won't be getting my vote. She wrecks my head though, she was useless at the job last night I thought, trying to be something she isn't - a good and well-informed presenter.

Ohhhh BOOHOO the big bad terrorist murderer got asked a few tough questions!

    Shocking stuff.

And now he's complaining about a "trial by television"...well, Martin, if thats the only trial you'll ever have to face you should consider yourself extremely lucky.

Oh and the SF propaganda doesn't work on us people that have, you know, an education.

Ohhhh BOOHOO the big bad terrorist murderer got asked a few tough questions!

It's a question of balance, of which there was none shown by O'Callaghan.

The 7 candidates have an equal right to run and therefore an equal right to be heard and shown an equal amount of respect of which O'Callaghan didn't do.

    Useless presenter

miriam wasn't entirlely accusing mcguinness of murder she was seeing how'd he react when accused of murder

but did definitely show her opinion, which mcguinness actually managed to challenge even if a bit angrily

should a news reporter ever show contempt?

Now we are getting to the point.... you are absolutely right in posing the question and in my opinion a reporter/presenter of such a programme should remain ENTIRELY impartial and not be contemptuous to any one person.

She stepped over the line, RTE have been harping on about the MMG/IRA connection for way too long, can RTE not see that what we've already heard from MMG is what we will hear, nothing more, nothing else will come out except the same stuff already spouted...so move on RTE for christs sake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,404 ✭✭✭✭vicwatson

miriam wasn't entirlely accusing mcguinness of murder she was seeing how'd he react when accused of murder

She is way out of her depth as a presenter going there, she doesn't have the know how to go ask a question of such depth. She is not a good enough presenter to handle MMG.

She is merely just another one of the RTE "Golden Circle"

it was sexist insofar as your post assumes that mc guinness being grilled by a woman should be less difficult for him

as for miriam , shes one of those south dublin types who grew up with all the priveledges ,a million miles away from the institutional prejudices faced by martin mc guinness in northern ireland , o callaghan would be labeled an uppity catholic had she grew up in the bogside , she baschically used the old , how often do you beat your wife routine on mc guinness

the most disgraceful peace of tv journalism i've ever seen in Ireland - RTE is fast becoming a FOX news type tv station i.e personal biases are influencing the coverage and impartiality has gone out the window, and when that tv station is funded by the taxpayer something is seriously wrong

let's put our personal feelings towards martin mcguinness aside for a moment, too many people are responding to this debate by justifying Miriam's behaviour because of Mcguinness's alleged past deeds, that is beside the point

Do we want a national broadcaster that is as impartial and fair as possible? I think all fairminded people would say yes - even if you despise Martin Mcguinness you would have to admit that the way Miriam O Callaghan addressed him during last nights debate was a disgrace, it was a presidential election debate and he has legally earned his place on the polling card - she was unprofessional and just made snide comments and demonstrated personal hostility towards him all night, on a forum like this that would be fine but as a tv presenter whose wages are paid for by the Irish people (many of whom will vote for McGuinness) during a presidential election debate watched by hundreds of thousands her spiteful attitude towards him was uncalled for and entirely the wrong platform for such a partizan display to take place, to single out one candidate like that for constant smears was simply wrong - and remember all this from the host of the debate, RTE should be ashamed and O' Callaghan should be suspended but establishment Ireland will roll on just as the bankers and speculators and FF circus did for so long, nobody rocking the boat, patting themselves on the back, their snouts in the trough until the next disaster befalls us and yet again you and me will pay for tolerating this kind of injustice, do yourself a favour and register your disapproval by pinging a mail to complaints@rte.ie, put your feelings about McGuinness to one side, this is about the integrity of our media, everything else is screwed in this country, shall we just let it all go to ****e?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,404 ✭✭✭✭vicwatson

do yourself a favour and register your disapproval by pinging a mail to complaints@rte.ie,

It's a waste of time, RTE don't listen to complaints, they are like "deny all allegations of wrongdoing" by return of e-mail. They don't listen to the people that pay their wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭stooge

yet another reason not to pay my tv license
160e to watch a state broadcaster try to influence the peoples choice by not being impartial? I think Donfers summed everything up quite nicely.

I have my own reservations about MMG, but the attacks on him, Norris, Gallagher and Dana have been sickening given the easy time the other candidates have had. I hadn't planned to vote but this will get me out...

I would definitely be of the opinion that ANYONE who would support such tripe as gets spouted by the gold-plated idiots at the head of SF simply cannot be of a high enough level of intelligence to operate and function in a modern liberal society. The inability to question your leaders and the choices they have made in the past puts you in the same category as the 15% or so who voted for FF in the last election.

I'm sure you would describe that 15% as DELUDED and well...a bit simple. I would too. I hold SF supporters in the same regard and I love to see these liars and murderers being called out while they're up on a parapet trying to pretend they're Ghandi-esque.

I never actually watched the programme (or anything else that she's in), mainly because her accent makes my ears bleed.

    Here's part of a report:
RTÉ SAYS it has received more than 100 complaints about Wednesday’s Prime Time debate between the presidential candidates.
Many of the phone calls and e-mails alleged that Martin McGuinness was unfairly treated by presenter Miriam O’Callaghan, who asked the Sinn Féin candidate a series of questions about his IRA membership and his knowledge of the killers of Private Patrick Kelly.
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland said it had received a number of complaints about the programme, which it would investigate.
Mr McGuinness claimed yesterday the debate was unfair and amounted to “trial by television”.
“I was accused of being a murderer. That was wrong,” he said, speaking in Cavan.
During the debate, O’Callaghan asked Mr McGuinness how he squared his belief in God with the fact that he was “involved in the murder of so many people”.
Mr McGuinness described this as a “disgraceful comment” and remarked that another of O’Callaghan’s questions was “stupid”.

How will you face your god in heaven knowing you have been involved/responsible for so many murders Martin?

Disgraceful question to be honest and im getting sick of RTE amongst other media continually targetting McGuinness. All they are doing is pushing more and more of the neutral vote towards him. This presidential campaign just shows what a joke RTE and vast majority of our media in this country have become.

I'm embarrassed to think I thought she would have been a good candidate for the late late when tubs gets the boot. She can **** right off now, Sean Moncgrieff all the way:)
